can i still case my cakes? and couple other questions...
    #3203465 - 10/01/04 12:01 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

This is my first time growing, but since everything was going so well i decided to case some of my cakes and just leave the others (as cakes.) well, my casings are doing awsome (tons of pins) but my cakes arent really showing anything yet. I dunked all the cakes but did not roll them, so maybe this is part of the problem. although im sure they'll begin pining soon i can tell that the casings are going to yield a much better flush in the end. i just wanted to know if its too late to case them? if i can, should i dunk them again? (its been about 6 days since birthing.)

another question: is it ok to use a 10:1 h202 solution to mist? i thought it was but someone in another post mentioned it was bad for the pins?...

and one more: is there any reason i shouldnt have the light on 24/7?

I noticed my first pins 24 hours ago, and now theres almost 40 visable per 4x8 bread tin! i wish i had a camera...

I'm not sure about other questions, but don't leave light on 24/7, it does not promote proper growth... put the light on a 12 hour cycle

yes you can still case them.
No dont dunk again
and yes you can mist with 10:1 water/peroxide....UNTILL PINS FORM if needed, but once pins form you dont wanna mist with anything at all,not even straight water.
as far as the light,24/7 wont hurt unless it is contributing to raising the temperture inside your fruiting chamber, and drying out the casings,ect..,but its not needed.an hour a day is fine, heck personally i only run the light about 15 minutes a DAY,AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD GREAT SUCESS,AND IN REALITY THEY ONLY NEED MICROSECONDS OF LIGHT TO TRIGGER PINNING,HOWEVER THE DO GROW TOWARDS THE LIGHT SO ALWAYS HAVE THE ONLY LIGHT SOURCE IN THE TOP.
GOOD LUCK AND CONGRADUULATIONS.
PS SORRY I FORGot to turn caps lock off and im too lazy to retype this.

Did you cold shock the cakes. That should jump start them if you still want to try having some off cakes for compairison.

thanks for the advice,

I did the dunk in the fridge so that should have cold shocked too. the main reason i still did cakes was from fear of contamination of casings, but they all turned out fine, so now i feel i might as well case em all.

my main problem at this point is that im only getting just over 80 humidity (even though im using a humidifier!) i think the problem might be the diameter of the tubing. i did add some perlite to the terrarium (but they are on top of aquarium rocks i put in for decoration) i guess ill just have to add more...

can i just stick in a bowl or something of wet perlite?

I'd say go ahead and case the cakes. Yesterday I cased some cakes that had been in my terrarium for like a month and today mycelium's growing. It's worth a shot.
Also, perlite humidification is the way to go... you'll probably need to cover the bottom with damp perlite to get the humidity up. I don't know if a bowl would do enough.
Good luck

Not sure about the light thing since so many people say 12-18 per day only, but when I tried that I had mushrooms growing upside down, twisted, you name it. As soon as I left the light on 24/7, they all grew straight up. YMMV

Store bought is usually 3% peroxide I believe, so you want 1 part of that for every 10 parts water.

With regard the the perlite question, a bowl (or aluminum loaf pan) of wet perlite should supply sufficient humidity to the casings. A friend of mine uses this method to humidify 3 casings in a rubbermade tub. After a few days there is substantial condensation on the sides of the tub, which is usually wiped off before it can accumulate in the bottom. Perlite, especially with a low surface area such as that in a bowl, takes a while to bring the chamber up to the proper humidity though. After fanning I suggest a light misting (unless you have pins and no dripshield) to give the perlite a head start.
