casing question
    #3200215 - 09/30/04 04:04 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

As a first timer I've decided to ignore all sensible advice and go ahead and case my cakes when theyre done.

one thing I'm having trouble with in the teks is, I don't really understand the types of containers mentioned mostly (what on earth is a 'solo cup'?), but more importantly, whilst they are specific about how thick the layers of bottom lining material and actual casings should be, they don't really seem to say anything about the thickness of the crumbled myc layer.. All told I'm trying to figure out if its possible to cram it all in the abundant chinese takeaway tubs I have lying about.

I can understand that spreading out the surface area would increase yield, but how thick should that layer be to avoid, well, just growing crap?

Try using a 1/2 to 3/4 inch substrate layer.  I believe I read a post from Hyphae saying he found this to be the optimal thickness.  And we all know Hyphae knows his shit.

Hyphae said:

Crumble into nickel sized chunks and make sure that substrate is as level as you can get it!  3pts. would work better but two will work for sure and don't put that casing mix on too thick for that depth substrate I'd recommend 1/2-3/4in. max

Hope this helps ya!

Substrate levels can be anywhere from 1/2-4in. but I recommend 1-2in. for your most efficient use of substrate. Half an inch bottom verm layer is plenty if you want to use one, and casing layer depth can be in the 3/8-3/4 range depending on substrate depth, I prefer 1/2in. but a 4in. deep substrate may very well respond to a 1in. casing level better especially when it come to harvesting many flushes. GL friend Th at 1/2-3/4in.Silven was refering to the casing layer depth BTW  Thank you for the nice comments.
