Confused on Casings
    #3200075 - 09/30/04 03:31 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Okay so I've done casings before using wet vermiculite for the bottom layer, but I would like to know if there is an advantage to using dry vermiculite?? There are several TEKs which explian it going either way.. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Also, another question.. stupid as it may be. Ive got 10 jars going great right now.. no contams and great growth. I'm looking to try a grain substrate for my next cycle. Could I take some lil slices off one of my cakes and add it to steralized substrate.. would that colonize correctly?? Is there any way to use colonized cakes to grow in jars??

Thanks for the help

Sammy

Using just straight verm for your casings isn't all that great.  You would be better off with a 50/50 verm/coir casing, or a 40/60 verm/coir casing, IMO.

I believe what you are talking about is a grain to grain transfer, and yes it should work atleast IMO if you were to do it in a very sterile glovebox.  Wait for someone elses advice on this though to see if it matches up with what I said.

Dry verm would be bad. Reason for wet verm is to give moisture to the substrate, thats why you use the bottom layer. Which isn't needed at all by the way. Dry verm is going to take away moisture from the substrate (bad thing).

Silvens right on with the grain to grain transfers. The more cake you put in the new jars the quicker they'll colonize but you only need a tiny sliver. Make sure you shake the grain jars well onces growth starts in the new jars to spread around the myc!

Some people do indeed put dry verm under their casings to absorb excess water, It actually doesn't pull out moisture as you would think it would, just as the dry verm layer on PFTek jars doesn't.

Hmm well it seems silly to me, I have nothing absorbing extra water and have no problems down there but whatever works for you. I guess it comes down to do you want to absorb extra moisture or give your substrate more moisture..

Well after being around a while you'll see some peeps overwatering mishaps it happens, I myself don't need to use a bottom layer at all but there are teks out there that suggest it and I'm just cluing you into that thats all.

I know you are I was just then commenting to my opinion on the idea of it for the thread starter

I mean I havn't used a bottom layer, wet or dry every so I can't say for sure that one or neither of these does any good but the dry one seems to do much less good to me. The wet one seems like it would do some good giving water to the substrate but seems like more hassle then it's worth to me.

And were not talking lubes, were talking either wet or dry..you get no lubes..I prefer natural wetness to either lubed or dry though. Can you spell chaffing? I can't. Someone tell me how please.
