    #3193148 - 09/28/04 07:46 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

i guess that the lighting was poor last time and the specimen that i had was wilting, etc. :frown:

these are better though! i also have pictures of the fully grown ones now too.

details:

1. found under pine trees in western massachusetts, USA
2. white gills, unattached
3. solid stem
4. cap, yellow with white warts

anyone know if the ID of amanita muscaria v. formosa is correct?
thanks!

All the pics I found of panthers though have them as a browner color. Also, these are from Massachusetts, and all the info I have about panthers says they're a west-coast mushroom and very rare in the east...?

Those aren't panthers, I usually only find those in the spring too, I'd have to say Aminita Muscaria var. Formosa, not good for eating, wait till you find the red variety.

Agreed, they look like Var Formosa. If they are Formosa they are good for eating and smoking if you prepair them properly.

They are just as psychoactive if not more.

what would be the incorrect way of preparing them?

I'm planning to dry them at 200 degrees in the oven and then either consuming them like that, or grinding them up and making a tea. What would be the best way if not that? I'd like to make the best of this find.

great! thanks so much for the link.
they're in my oven right now, but i *definitely* would like confirmation from a few more trusted people on this site about the identification of this mushroom before ingesting them. i'm extra-cautious about these types of things, of course.

Nice pics. They do look like A. Muscaria var. Formosa. If you want to be extra careful, at the point that you decide 100% to eat them you may want to eat a small sample and wait a few days to see if anything analogous to mild poisoning occurs. It is best to be 100% positive before going into a trip for two reasons: 1- your health 2- your peace of mind while tripping. These particular mushrooms are fairly easy to identify from the color and the base, but nonetheless you may want to take extra precautions.

I remeber reading something may have beeen an old post that the yellow stemmed aminita muscaria var. formosa have an alkaloid present that makes them a bit more toxic then the regular kind, all speculation though.... Maybe an expert could clear that up...

It's better not to play guessing games with any Amanita species. Just wait a while and keep studying Mycology is wondrous.

I believe they all are toxic. If you prepare the yellow ones correctly you can eat them. Ive bought a mix of amantis from iamshaman and they sent me a mix of red and yellow caps, they got the job done.

i dont know if this clears much up... but I at those today! I was 100% sure they were var. Formosa first, which those are. Anyways I just posted about my experience so maybe you would like to read it. I dont suggest doing them in the oven tho... I tried them liek that last night and ate 20 grams of my dried amanitas and didnt feel a thing. U have to make sure not to make them too crispy. Today I saute'd then in butter in a frying pan and ate them like that. They are DAMN tasty too! Anyways read my post and I hope it helps. I had a hell of a time... almost too crazy acctually! Its nothing like I have ever experienced before
