Please help identify
    #3199950 - 09/30/04 02:58 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I am having a hard time positively identifying these mushrooms that were growing in manure in our cow pasture. Some look and smell like magic mushrooms I have eaten before yet since i am new to picking them myself I wanted another opinion before I go munching any of them. I know i have found several different species, i am just hoping that any of them are magic!

The spore prints were dark brown, the have a very distinct sweet corn chip type smell and some are bluing.

Any and all help is much appreciated!

jinks---

Be sure to read through all of the shroomery's online text documents. Secondly you should separate them out by species, get a higher resolution photo and list all the attributes for shrooms that are set in the guidelines. They look promising but IMO it's too hard to tell for sure %100 --- the photos are way too small.

Well your pictures are way to small to really tell you for sure. Some of those look like Cubensis which are active. They bruise blue, but that doesn't mean every mushroom you have that blues is active. The ones with the Golden brown caps are what look to be cubensis. Sorry I can't help you more. Try to get better pictures and seperate the different species you've found.

If they are growing directly on cow dung in the south east US, drop purple brown spores, and bruise noticeably blue, then you have an active shroom, P. Cubensis. In this habitat the bluing reaction is a dead give away. Make sure it's really blue and not just your imagination. Be ware of the green gills; they are dangerously poisonous!

As cosmicsea mentioned you should always separate your collections by species while in the field, once mushrooms get banged around and dry out a little it can be difficult to separate similar looking species. You will find that people here are reluctant to ID mushrooms in mixed collections.

Peace

Thank you so much! My friends and I plan on munching them tomorrow so I'll let you know! If they are good, I have more than enough for everyone!

just thought i'd chime in ans second shroomydan's advice.

in this particular case, that is a fine set of keys to identify P. cubensis in your area.

i can not stress strongly enough about his point on seperating field collections while in the field collecting them. it would be easy to have an odd mushroom from another species [of uncertain edibility] in a collection if you are not careful and many poisonings have resulted from failure to observe this practice.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
