this is 1 of the tubs that i am using for about 3 cakes (filled with either geolite or perlite) but i have a question for a top what should i use? i was planning on jus placing it in my room next to my bed not covered from light or anything. i have 2 tube floro lightin my room, i figure thats enough light, and the temp will be 75-79 the whole time no prob. trashbag? and if i use one do i put it on so its tightly stretched or loose? i was plannin on seran wrap tight across the top because its clear and plastic. 3 cakes and geolite (perlite) sound like it will work??? o and im gettin a humid. gauge to test humidity, what should that be at since you can have too much i know it cant stay at 100% or too high

How about the lid? If you don't have it get a piece of plexiglass to fit it. put some of that weather strippin on the top of the tub and lay the plexi on that. That stuff hold humidity pretty well.

try a lid with a square cut out of the top. then get some plexiglass and seal it to the hole in the lid with silicon sealant... it's working for me!

If your just getting cakes to fruit dont worry bout if you get too much humidity, its only casings you have to worry bout too much humidity with.

actually, cakes need more humidity than casings... 95% is reccomended. you can get away with 85% on casings.
just my $.02

What kind of negative effects might too much humidity have on a casing?

Possible effects(possible, I am not saying it will always happen): slower growth, bacterial blotch, aborts.

Your hygrometer is probably bunk. What are you doing for humidity. Use a PMP or Perilite and your humidity is fine. Spray if cakes or casings look drier. Fruiting chamber shouldnt be sealed completly.

Depends on everything on how often. Keep an eye on your casings and cakes and if they look dry, mist. Use a fine mist and spray over the casings to let the water fall until you reach near saturation, but not saturated. If theres no myc showing (on casings) (or shrooms) yet then you can directly spray the casing/cake.

get some perlite:
dump it it a bucket (wear a mask). half fill the bucket with water, slooshing-spraying it in at the start to stop a big dustcloud coming up. the perlite floats. get a strainer, scoop it out, wait 10 secs, dump in tub. repeat until tub has an inch or so deep all over, and add cakes (forget this with casings, or it'll be too foggy). (it was a late flush, so the casing was all dried out or i wouldn't put it on perlite)
