dunking
    #3199280 - 09/30/04 10:49 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

OK folks, sorry to ask a stupid question, but I'm new to this, and I have read the teks. When water drips on the cakes, they turn blue. Dunking (submerging them in water and putting in the fridge for a while) doesn't do the same thing?
Also, I have 3 colonized jars. Should I try dunking or coldshocking before birthing, or just birth them and let them do their thing?

Yes, the blue is a sign of bruising. When you are dunk a cake it will turn a bluish color. Although, you are bruising the cake, you are replenishing it with water that is able to produce more fruits. The cake will take a few days to recover from a dunk, but the water you have provided will pay off in the long run. I wouldn't dunk before birthing... but I would coldshock. Dunk and coldshock after the first flush IME.

If this is cubensis I dont see any need to coldshock at any point. just my opinion. I would instead if I were you, learn to case the jars.

As you can see from the poll in the list of threads that we all have different opinions on dunking.

If I were you, and I know I'm not, I would dunk and skip the cold shock, and then case it after the dunk.  Though cakes can get rather messy depending on your substrate after they are dunked.

If you plan on birthing them as cakes, I would dunk and coldshock them at the same time, and then birth.

Anyway, good luck bud!

I beleive Anno was saying cold shocking with cubes is not what most newbs think it is. We are not shocking the myc to fruit as with cubes this does not work. We just put the cakes in the fridge while they DUNK to reduce chances of contams.

There is no real point in a cold shock only (without dunk) for cubes.

Lowering substrate core temps in casings/cakes does help. And BTW the fridge is full of contams, The cold slows down growth both contams and myc. I have had awesome pinsets without using the fridge so it's not a must by no means but if you want a quick dunk and drop your cakes core temp I don't think it will hurt one bit. I have seen a few stubborn casings fruit after been cold shocked so I will not rule out cold shocking altogether.

I've found cold shocking GT's before fruiting I got a pinset in 7 days. I have 6 GT casings that are on day 16 and I am finally seeing primordia. Was a grain to grain transfer from one of the jars that made a casing that fruited in 7 days too that all these 6 casings came from. This is the only strain thats been so extreame about fruiting though so I know its not my conditions. Brazils, Z's and Cams sitting next to them in the same chambers take 7-10 days before I get pins, 14 at the most but not just primordia, actual pins.

Perhaps its because the GT is the only strain I isolated on agar (originally, these are some of my first succesful GT jars, bad syringe and had to isolate from green) and I ended up with very vigorous mycelium. It just keeps growing. The casings look so white and fluffy but overlayed. All the myc is still healthy looking, just sooo thick and very areial too.

All my casings I dunk and throw in the fridge (if theres room) after the first flush though. I have some casings starting their 7th flush (1 quart of rye). Only got 7 grams off the 6th flush but looking about the same for this one. Probably all its got but I have a couple of Z casings that I've squeezed just under 4 ounces out of, each casing 1 quart. Some Z's I did along side and didn't dunk quit two flushes ago and gave me about 3 ounces per casing (just under for each one IIRC). Dunking helps in the long run. Most of my casings I dont keep around for long but I didnt do many Z's at first and I really like them so I've kept them. New Z's in a few days to replace though. These will all be dunked though. Occasionally I dont if I'm lazy or theres no room cause to many are being dunked already and if I dont care much about the casing (on its last flush I'm gonna give it) or if it looks moist enough and I'm lazy.
