Dissapointed w/Medium vs. Coarse Verm
    #3198651 - 09/30/04 03:08 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Ive always used coarse grade verm. for my pf jars, and never had a problem. I bought a batch of "proffesional grade vermiculite" from ww.micronmagick.com](no spamming non-vendors please)www.micronma and used it w/their organic rye grain berries powder to make my jars.

Well, its been almost 3 weeks and the jars are colonizing so slowly its driving me crazy, some of the jars arent even colonizing yet! The most colonized jar so far is ~ 1/8th done...I was wondering if others had this same experience with finer grade verm. in their pf jars. Im guessing this is happening because the substrate is alot less 'fluffy' and is packed alot tighter due to finer verm.

On to your post..... Never had a huge problem with the finer stuff. Make sure your moisture content is right and you dont pack it down at all.

Try and get the chunkier stuff if you can.......

you're right, finer grade gives you less "fluffy" texture. i like my coarse vermiculite, it works great.

don't blame the verm for everything... could just be strain or moisture content... lots of stuff... but it could be the verm.

anyone else?

Actually, I'm using fine grade vermiculite, and I had signs of growth in 6 of my 7 jars in 5 days.  One jar is already 40 to 50% colonized on day 8.

My strain is equadorian, and I'm using fine grade verm with brown rice flour.  I have yet to experience a problem with fine grade verm.

I have used fine grade verm in the past. I do prefer the coarser verm, but I don't think that the verm is a likely culprit here because it has been used countless times by all sorts of people with success. If the substrate wasn't packed down into the jars I would look into other possible variables (ie: temp., moisture level, substrate mixture, any smells).

you're problem may be that you are using it with a whole grain...
vermiculite isnt needed, use it with the PF Tek and you'll
probably see great results

It's a powder, not whole grain, which is why he used verm.

I'm guessing you probably packed it down some then?  My fine verm seems to work perfect, and I just dump it in the jars, and don't pack at all, just lightly push anything that's in my "dry verm area" down to make it level with the rest.

If this isn't the problem... I don't know what it is.  Maybe you made it too wet or dry since you're used to using a different grade of verm?  I know they have different moisture holding capabilities, and I believe Anno is the one who did the experiment with it.

The fact that it's colonizing at all is a good sign though, maybe you just didn't get as many spores in there as you usually do, so it's starting off slower.

Anyway, good luck.  Hope that this helps.

Both are new ingredients..its a different substrate then what you used, why blame the verm size and not the entire mixture? Or the rye berries powder? I'd say its probably either to much or to little:
verm
rye powder
water
Not the grade of verm. Though courser verm I've heard is better..those results are pretty extreame.
