I think it'd be better for your "karma" to turn him into an animal shelter or a loving family. Domestic animals released into urban areas or the wild typically have a poor time surviving. "Freeing the prison" in your mind may be a relief for you, but not the best decision for the dog's sake.

What viaggo said.
Although, if it appeared obvious that he was unhappy, and readily ran away when you allowed him to, then I personally would let him go too. That's to say, I would allow him the freedom to chose (if the below is not possible \/).
Another solution would be to approach the rest of your family about why keeping your dog in its current environment is hurting you, and try to make a compromise with them. I personally could never leave a dog tied up outside all the time. Also, take him for walks and show him affection, if you're not already.

God, Please, don't let it run around loose.. I just saw, I think for the first time in my life today, a fully grown dog on the left side of the highway. I see deer, squirrels, and tons of racoons here and there.. but never an actual dog like that. It was pretty sad..
There are always people who're animal lovers to their bottom of their hearts [like me] that will glady adopt your dog.
It sounds like cats are more suitable for you, if you really need a pet in the future.

A dead dog is no worse than a dead ant. It only affects your emotions based upon your social conditioning.
That's not to downplay the importance of a dog's life, as I too am an animal lover.
Giving your dog up for adoption would be the best thing to do, although it sounds like your family still wants to keep him tied up out back. I can see where you're coming from with this, as my neighbours had a beautiful dog on a 3 foot rope his whole life, even during winter when his water dish would freeze, and they never took him for walks. When he died, I almost felt relief for him.

Dude, your dogs going to die. Or someone might find it, but what if they treat the dog 10x worse than you do. You should just find someone who wants it. I could never let either of my dogs go, even though they're always soiling the carpeting in my bedroom :-P

yah dude better to start taking your dog for long walks everyday and keep feeding it, play catch with it in the park.
If you let it go it will probably slowly starve to death or get hit by a car. Or if its lucky it will end up in a shelter where you should take it in the first place if you really cant keep it.

WTF? If you let that dog loose, thats a death sentance. He'll most likely be dead within 3 days. Probly not a comfortable death either like the ones they get in a shelter. Most likely he'll bleed out in the road from a car, or starve to death, or be eaten by other animals. He may not be happy were he is, if so thats your fault for not walking him enouph. For god sakes if your to much of a pussy to care for the dog properly find another home for him, or put him in the animal shelter, where he might have a chance at being adopted, or he'll die a humane death. Edit* and saying that he'd choose it because he runs away from you is bullshit. My dog runs off every time he gets the chance, but it dosen't mean he won't want to come back when he gets lost. Do Not Let the dog loose!

how the hell is a domesticated dog going to survive? He's going to get skinny as shit and probably die ... that's cruel to just let him go.. he's used to being fed.... and on top of that he will probably get run over

That dog isn't much more caged than the rest of us. The only differance is our cage is not the walls of a house, but the strict order of society, and the break away from nature, and simple, non parasitic-living.
your dog is just as free as you allow him to be. Take him on a big walk everyday. Thats more than most people get.
"death is worth freedom.to me,i know my dog understands that more than some people here"
so basicly your saying your dog wants you to kill it, because you know he would choose that over living in a house?
give me a break. You obviously don't need to own animals any more.If your not able to find a home for it. Mail the fucking dog to me, i'll pay for the shipping.

the caged society starts somewhere.i have no clue what his feelings are completly.no one wants to be owned.the only thinkthey want to be owned.would you want to be raped like that?i'm sure its no. heres a good song "I didn't ask you to take me from here I didn't ask to be broken I didn't ask you to stroke my hair Or treat me like a worthless token But my skin is thick My mind is strong I am built like my father was I've done nothing wrong So free me I just wanna feel what life should be I just want enough space to turn around And face the truth So free me When are you gonna realize, You're just wrong? You can't even think for yourself Can't even make up your minds So my mind's a jail And I hate the whole goddam human race What the hell do you want from me? Kill me if you just dont know Or free me I just wanna feel what life should be I just want enough space to turn around Cos you're all fucked And someday maybe you'll treat me like you" goldfinger-free me master

what your doing is a crime. A felony in most states i believe. You can't just leave a domesticated dog to fend for itself. Again, you are obviously not capable of giving your dog a good life. send it to me, rather than killing it.

Ok godamnit dont do this! i realize you are a kind soul and think you are doing what is best but you are not! dogs are domesticated animals they have been bred for generations to live with humans! they are not equipped or able to survive in urban areas without care!
If you do this let me know so i can rate you 1 shroom and dislike you forever. That dog relies on you for its survival and if you do what you are planning you are neglecting your responsibility (that you accepted when you got that dog!) and consigning the animal you claim to love to betrayal and death.
This is like 'letting free' your pet gold fish by tossing it on a sidewalk. It cannot and willnot survive!
if you are unwilling or unable to care for your pet for gods sakes take it to a shelter or find it a new home!
if a mother finds herself unable to care for her child she gives it up for adoption she doesnt put it out on the street to die! (if its a remotely caring, compassionate, decent mother)
please rethink this.
You are about to do a bad thing

Wow, great. So you get to impose an almost certain death sentance upon this animal based on your 'vegen' whiny ass thinking, Great. Why dont you go run out into the woods for a few weeks and fucking die. Selfish prick. And yes, Im a dick I know that. I call em like I see em. I dont sugarcoat shit. Your either some 'misunderstood' teenager or a very imature adult. BOOFUCKINGHOO
