What was your first "newbie" mistake?
    #3197048 - 09/29/04 07:04 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I thought this would be interesting to see what everyone's first real mistake was in the art of cultivating mushrooms. I remember when a friend first started out, he decided to go for wild bird seed as the substrate. He had quite a big fish tank heater and the incubator got up above a whopping 100?F. Of course, the substrate dried out and the developing mycelium probably suffered thermal death or just stopped growing due to the dry bird seed. Oh well, he chalked that one up to experience!

I'm curious to hear any stories you guys might have about any beginner mistakes you or your friends may have made.

Hmm well the only mistake that I thought I made on my first grow was doing the cold dunking and then the next night the crubling and casing while drunk. Not fun, ahhhh
Obviously I had other mistakes and my grow was not under optimal conditions, but it was not bad at all and no major mistakes.

This time I fucked up bad and lost more than half my jars to contams, didn't sterilize the jars long enough because I was fucking stupid. oh well I don't do it for the money, I just love growing shrooms yay

I made my first mistake last night. Too much water in the substrate/verm mixture. Had to start over.

made a casing for my first grow and had horrible humidity (actually, I dont know for sure, but the casings started to look pretty dry), and the temp was probably about 65 F. What I find amazing is that I still got an abort from that horrid casing. Thats why I still use ecuador cubes :-D

My first mistake was drowning my perlite. The water level was almost all the way up to the top of the perlite. The perlite didn't have enough surface area to bring the humidity up to the right level. Thankfully, I realized that fact early on and was able to save my cakes and achieve a nice yield.

Sterility and fruiting like they tell you in the PF tek. Casing gets many more shrooms.

I started on the PF tek and got some decent results, then went straight to a bulk straw project inside the infamous Magic Mushroom tent. I had no real clue as to the intricacies(sp?) of the mushroom life cycle, I just had visions of a carpet of fat shrooms. Unfortunately, I don't know what I did wrong, probably cuz I did several things wrong. And that damn tent hung out in my bedroom for like 2 months without doing a damn thing, besides starting to reek. Then the flies started to breed in it, and a couple ghost mushrooms came up. A waste of time, effort, money, and PF cakes because I didn't have the knowledge to back it up. I suggest to most newbs - "Baby steps."

well there is a little story behind it... its a small PC.. only holds 7 half pint jars.. anyways, my roommate made a still for distilling some absinthe, and modded the PC to be the boiling container. he cut out a piece of the steel on the lid of it, and tried to braise a pipe fitting on.. well that didnt work so he used automotive grade epoxy on it (he said "its good enough to seal engine blocks, 15psi should be fine").. well it worked fine.. i made plenty of jars, and rice for dinner with it.. but the last time it blew the pipe fittings right off and into the cieling.. w00ps!! time to get my own PC :P
