Highly Controversial
    #3196904 - 09/29/04 08:33 PM (13 years, 20 days ago)

Another lovely one of those topics.

I did a search and went through numerous threads only to find contradicting statements all over. Obviously there are several opinions out there, but I want to get a consensus.

Do you dunk (PF style or rye) your cakes before you CASE them?
Dunk or no?
You may choose only one
Dunk it! Bigger fruits, more H20, crumbling not a prob
No dunk! Not needed and makes the cakes too soft to crumble

Onetime, do you use a layer of dry verm in your wbs jars? How does wbs compare to popcorn?

I heard you have to take out all the floating things when you soak it (wbs). The dude has some rye going right now, almost done colonizing, might try dunking that. The rye really does make a sort of cake.

I don't think it is necessary to take out the floating things (usually miscellaneous sunflower seeds and millet). Also, using a dry vermiculite layer in wild bird seed jars wouldn't make much of a difference.

I would dunk the cake after the first flush, not before it.

Any specific reason why? This is what I'm most curious about. The dude is def going to dunk after the first flush, but he wants to know about beforehand.

You can certainly dunk before your first flush if you have confidence, you will see increased yields so why not do it? Cakes dehydrate while the myc consumes nutes and moisture, rehydrating is always a good thing if possible/practical IMO.

I understand that is the consenses with cakes but I am trying to determine if it will really be all that beneficial to dunk cakes before you CASE.

If you're going to fruit from a cake (double ended cased or whatever) then I'd dunk it for a good 12 hours or so. I fridge dunk, personally; the cold shock isn't necessary but it does help your pinset.

However, if you're going to break your cake up and case it, then dunking is .... well, casings take a bit of practice to get down perfectly. I'd suggest breaking up a cake that hasn't been dunked, and applying only slightly moist casing material, then misting from a foot or two up until you get the moisture content where you want it.

I only say that because you can always add more water, but you can't take it away!

Birds of a feather...

The Dude has plenty of experience with casings but has never dunked before he crumbled. Trying to decide which route to take with a considerable number of jars/containers>>>casings. Maybe he should do a comparison........ Thanks for any and all input.

Dunked cakes are easier to crumble. Plus are moister. Having more water makes myc easier to crumble. It won't mush and you want the peices as small as you can so soft is good. Shrooms are 90% water or more..the more water you give them, the better. Save for hydroponics

I dunk my casings why not dunk cakes before making them casings. And cold shock can only help cubies.
