Amanita muscaria only grow...

In one of the recent threads, mjshroomer said that Amanita muscaria cannot be grown outside of nature (have to grow on their own) and that for the last 50 years people have been trying but failed. What is the reason for this? Why can we grow so many different types of mushrooms by inoculating them in jars but not Amanita muscaria? I tried to ask this question in that thread but it was locked before I had the chance. I would have just PM'ed mjshroomer but I thought this was a thread worthy question.

Because they are stubborn fucks.
Growing the mycelium should be no problem, fruiting is near impossible to enduce.
I bet outdoor techs work, but it may take a while to actually set in. I would expect to wait a year after dumping a load of amanita mycelium under a pine tree before they would grow if they would. I actually have no idea if that will work though it seems like it should.

Because these mushrooms are mychorrizal, which means they only grow in association with tree roots.
Mychorrizal mushrooms are VERY difficult to grow because it is damn near impossible to make them form the association needed with the tree roots.

Is there some way you can "help" the mushroom form the association needed with the tree roots? Why won't the mushroom just do it on its own?

In theory, yes. But it would probably be extremely difficult.

It also has to be the right tree roots. From what I've heard, they usually grow under certain types of trees and not at all under certain other ones. There may also be other strains of fungi in the soil that are needed for amanitas to fruit. We just don't know. Your best bet is to have one of those trees in your yard and innoculate the mycellium in the ground where there are lots of roots. It may or may not work. It would probably have to be the right time of year and so on. I've never heard of them growing in warm climates so that must be a factor too.

pine and oak trees. ecosystems are great. life needs to consume the life of something else to live. i'm sure if you could synthesise the ecosystem of a giant oak or pine tree into little pans and whatnot, you would have no problem growing them indoors, but you would have to first know what the shroom needs. i have no idea what an oak or pine tree does, but it is advisable to find the appropriate settings, and try to get it to grow there naturally. i think it takes so much time cause the perfect ecosystem has to be created before it can fruit. the mushroom needs all the essential things in place first. no one seems to know what the essential things are. but dont take my word for it.. i dont know shit about growing shroomies.. just offering my thoughts.

hoping Mj sees this.
he said "You cannot take spores and grown them." i must be reading it wrong, but why have spores if they cannot grow? did you mean you cannot grow it in a non native habitat? or it wont grow at all period?

he meant, you can't take a spore print from the mushrooms and culture them in the lab and grow them in the lab. They'll grow fine from spores in nature.

You could germinate the spores in a lab and grow mycelium easily enough, but it needs that association with certain trees in order to fruit.

Well, it looks like I may have to start a new project, considering the fact that I have a shitload of pine and oak trees around here . Sad thing is, I've never seen them growing around here (haven't really given too much time looking though)

i've been doing a lot of research on this topic because i want to grow it indoors. i've read that they like birch trees the most out of any tree and they usually grow in some time in fall i think it was august. so if u want to grow them inside i think if u could find a birch and dig put some roots and put them below where u put your spores then it might work. also if you did a little research and found out what nutrients the birch roots pull out of the soil and add them in to the soil every once and awhile then i think u could have more success growing them.

I know they grow in symbiosis with fir trees too. I don't have a reference.

why grow them? they're all over the place.. you just gotta look in the right places and if you find a place.. dont tell anyone! the thing i find strange about amanita is that sometimes they grow alone. just one lonely amanita in the middle of the forrest. could it be that the mycelium of amanitas doesnt work like other mycelium, producing fruits every year? ive had places where just one grew and next year there werent any at all.
