Q about mushroom hunting
    #3196089 - 09/29/04 04:54 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Is there any danger in simply handling unidentified/poisonous mushrooms? I was told that if it is the right type and you touch it it may be absorbed into your skin and could kill you. Sounds like an old wifes tale but I was wondering if this holds any water.

Exactly.

No. There are no species know that will kill upon skin contact. There are even no species known where tasting and spitting out a tiny morcel of the mushroom wil kill. I have heard of people getting sick after tasting very poisonous species several (as in 15 or so) times on the same day, so you should be careful. These people did recover, btw.

I think and my girlfriend might be the only exception to this rule. Last year we found an enormous patch of Omphalotus olearius. Upon picking these mushrooms to examine them, we got some of the orange mycelial "sweat" on our skin. It burned like hell. It was like someone had poured acid on our skin. I posted about it here and ToxicMan said that was the only time he'd ever heard about something like this happening.

So other than messing with the mycelial biproducts(liquids) of Omphalotus olearius, you should be just fine touching whatever mushroom you want to.
