How tell if your cake is too dry?
    #3195734 - 09/29/04 03:16 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

What are some good ways to tell if your cake is too try?

Do cakes start bruising if they get too dry?

I'm a little worried, my cake looks a little on the dry side, and it looks like i'm having a horrible pin set. So far i'm only counting 3 equally sized pins. Thought i've done everything right.

This is a mycobag btw.

thanks

Yes. And they get kinda smooth, as opposed to fluffy when the moisture is high.

Dunk tek.

Dunk in clean water for 12-24 hours.

Good for right after birth, and inbetween flushes as well.

what if i just put in my cakes and they are smooth as well. Most were in for much longer than full colonization...should i reydrate now? The shrooms that did start growing were rubbery. Should i just take em all off, have a snack, and dunk em?

Yes drummindreadhead if it's past it's first flush atleast. Don't rip off all the pins though if it's initiating it's first flush. Wait until it flushes, and then dunk and let it flush again.

If they are still fruiting, wait untill the veils start to break and then harvest.

Dunk immediately afterwards. You can't dunk a cake if it has pins larger than about a 1/4 inch because they may abort, and then possibly rot if you don't remove them causing the cake to contam.

I think i might have fanned it for too long yesterday...?

Tip: Fanning duration need only be 20-30seconds, Thats all it takes and anymore just unnecessarily exposes your chambers to airborne contams. GL

Most likely junk, follow the teks as suggest, PMP or tub and perlite humidification is easier yet but inferior to the PMP (poor mans pod) and watch the indicators (beading water on the walls (good), split caps (too dry), mycelium on caps (too high an RH), etc; ). I recommend perlite base with water/peroxide at half the depth for a much more stable RH. Then you'll never need a hygometer! :wink:GL
