No Vermiculite!!! Help me!!!

Hey guys, I live in the Philippines and I'm just starting out. I was planning to use the PF Tek, but I can't find any vermiculite! Apparently, no one here has even heard of the stuff. Can anyone suggest something else that I could use as a substrate for a pf cake? Also, I'm sorry for sounding like a total noob on this one, but will fine grade perlite pass as a substitute for vermiculite? I thought it might since they're both made from volcanic gravel. By the way, thanks to those who answered my questions earlier, you've been a big help to me, especially since i'm just starting out. Thanks!

I'm sure you can get some online, but TD has never had to deal with that. Here they sell it at every hardware or gardening store.

you could do one of the grain teks instead. you will need to find rye seed, popcorn, or cracked corn, etc.

I read up on the grain teks, but all of the recipes or casing material seem to contain vermiculite. Do you know of any substitutes? Ordering online and paying for international shipping would be qutie a big expense, so I have to find a way to grow these things without any verm.

Hey! No kidding? That would be great if I could pull it off. Being a total noob, I wouldn't know what to do after the stuff gets colonized. Do I case it? Or can I do the PF method where I just put the cakes on top of some perlite? Thanks for the help!

Maybe you could use grain to make jars. Then you could use a straw/dung tek.

I thought about using a straw/dung tek, but I live in the middle of the city and those things are hard to find as well. about the only things readily available here that can be used as substrate are popcorn and noodles. Since I still have to use some verm for the casing, I don't think I can use popcorn. The noodles seems much more feasible since I don't have to use any verm, apparently. Any other suggestions?

And the search proved negative. It's because the effects of coffee have not been determined yet and no one has even considered using noodles and then coffee diluted to hydrate the substrate.
Look up Ramen Project and Coffee Project
The main problem would be sterilization (noodles can't handle it). But what if you boiled the coffee water to sterilize, then suck up several syringes and inoc ramen. in a plastic container - you might be on to something.
Cheap and easy to come by materials which would hopefully produce some impressive results...... Pure speculation right now.

Vermiculite is good because it holds moisture. Maybe you could try wood chips or shredded newspaper. I have never heard of anybody using shredded newspaper but it seems plausable, only downside is that the ink could have some reation to it. I dont really know, but it might work.

haven't heard of it. casings aren't a must. you can fruit just off the spawn itself with no casing. casing will get you better yields and more flushes though.

Really? You mean that when the jars are fully colonized I can just put them in a fruiting chamber and grow them out of the jar?

Thanks for the Tip! Could you tell me how exactly you case your popcorn with it? I have never cased or grown anything before

Has anyone ever tried using popcorn like a PF cake? Would a popcorn cake be able to hold together? I'm kinda scared of trying the casing method.
