The end of the internet is nigh

The end of the internet is nigh
By electricnews.net
Published Tuesday 28th September 2004 09:21 GMT

BT's Graham Whitehead has told the Irish Internet Association's Congress that the internet is dying, but that the future for broadband and networked technology is bright.

In a keynote speech during proceedings at Clontarf Castle, Dublin, BT Exact's principal consultant said that the anarchic and hazardous nature of the public internet meant that companies were now constructing supervised private IP networks. These private networks would be able to handle the amount of traffic that would be generated when broadband was ubiquitous, phone networks were IP-based, and common household objects had their own IP addresses.

"The internet is dead, or dying; it's full of viruses, worms and porn, you have to wear a kevlar suit before you go online," he said. "BT is creating a private network, which will be joined to other private networks, to which we will add voice over IP."

He said that the relatively low rate of broadband uptake in the UK, where there are 3 million DSL and 1.5 million cable broadband subscribers, is due to the fact that people don't see a need for broadband in their daily lives. He said that the evolution of data networks into always-on real-time access (AORTA) networks would lead to an increased number of networked devices in the home.

He predicted a future where washing machines, TVs, security systems and other electronically-controlled systems would all be networked, controlled and maintained by a virtual domestic supervisor. He even predicted the low-cost household items, such as tins of beans, would also have their own individual IP addresses, using the IPv6 protocol. This would allow intelligent supermarket shelves to order additional stock when required and would allow intelligent kitchen shelves to know whether or not an additional tin of beans is required.

Whitehead said technology would be driven by demographic changes in society, as the average household size falls towards one person per domestic unit and people turn to virtual communities for company and services. Robots would also be required to carry out tasks for which no humans are available. "Who do you think will be there to push your wheelchair around a nursing home, when we're not producing enough young people who will want to do that kind of thing?" he concluded.

"Beware of the End of the World (Wide Web)," Says Intel
, 09.10.04, 12:04 PM ET

Sep 10, 2004 (financialwire.net via COMTEX) -- (FinancialWire) Remember those "End of the World" signs? Well, Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) says it may be nearer than we think. Except the sign says "End of the World Wide Web."

It's a vision apparently shared by Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and AT&T Corp. (NYSE: T), all of whom are working feverishly, either together or apart to save the World Wide Web, which Intel and others see as becoming so overloaded it will eventually break.

At Intel's technical conference, CTO Patrick Gelsinger said the Internet will begin to collapse as millions of new computer users from developing nations begin to sign on.

"We're running up on some architectural limitations," Gelsinger was quoted as saying.

Gelsinger's solution is to build a new network over the current Internet, that would monitor and direct traffic and better fight security threats or traffic surges.

It's PlanetLab, some 429 computer nodes in 181 sites around the world, is supported by 150 universities and corporate research labs, including Princeton, Cambridge, Hewlett-Packard and AT&T.

However, Cisco controls most of the routers and switchers comprising the current web, and it may have other ideas.

How can one proclaim the end of the internet? We have barely seen the beginning IMO.

I think it's supposed to be some kind of icon, a visual metaphor representing the essence of the peace and unity shared amongst each of our appointed leaders, and that if we choose to maintain our faith in them with our lives and embrace their magnificent fantasy of unconditional national security, we shall be blessed with the gift of being able to continue to grow to our fullest, and live and learn in this supreme eutopia we call earth without the threat of fear, violence, corruption or any additional concerns such as fluoride spiked water and/or other common consumables containing poison, a deceptive media, a rotten education system, government sponsored terrorism or tainted vaccinations.

the government created it and its full of the truth so they will try and destroy it and replace it with a corprate alternative that is going to look way better. but me and the rest of the underground will have our own underground internet to keep the truth going. but sadly if america doesnt wake up most of us will be inprisoned for having underground communications

I don't really know if this is completely possible. There's no central internet as it is. Unless the only way to connect to a network is through one of these major groups, there's no way it could completely wipe out the internet.

The internet is dead, or dying; it's full of viruses, worms and porn

The internet's had viruses and porn for the 11 years I've been on it. Where's this guy been?

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. The Internet with a capital I might 'die,' but it wouldn't really ever die. The Internet is just a big network. Networks will ALWAYS exist as long as there's computers. The Internet isn't centralized. It can't just die. If anything it may fractionate into different networks, but I can't possibly see the concept of networked computers ever going away short of a nuclear holocaust where the human race is killed off.

back to death of the net - sounds more like greedy fuckers are trying to compartmentalize it, carve it up into managable chunks they can control and exploit.
death of a universal info storage and sharing system, yes maybe. it would be a shame.

From the second article:

I see no problem with developing a system that fights traffic surges and security threats, and as far as dealing with the increase in internet nodes when other countries begin to get online... that's what IPv6 is for, which is already being implemented and will most likely be the standard within 10 years or so.

Exactly. The information age is just begining. I have great hope for our future. I believe that the internet will bring about great social and economic change. Perhaps we will live to see a true free society.

In all seriousness..I hope you're kidding.

Huh? The internet has already been the best thing for free speech in centuries. All attempts to control it have failed.

By, "I hope you're kidding", do you mean that you hope the internet doesn't bring great social changes? Or do you mean that you think it's silly to believe the internet will bring great social changes?

Because it already has made some wonderful changes. It allows people with obscure interests to assemble, discuss, and advance their interests. It's a marvellous tool for creating easy access to information. The most popular websites on the internet are mostly started by small independant companies, or individuals often not interested in profit. Some have certainly lucked out and gotten rich as a result, but it's inexpensive and easy to create a professional, and highly accessible website. Anyone can do it.

So I'm kind of confused by what you're saying.

By that I mean I am hopeful that after reading those articles, the internet does not turn into a government owned, strictly monitored, soup can IP addresses giving, information controlled shit hole to the extent of having our little things such as washing machines being monitored and controllable by people working for the feds, this is another step closer to a strictly monitored hi-tech fascistic police-state no-freedom society, and it is being sold to us as if we are to believe it is a good thing. Before we know it they will be making excuses to give everybody microchips which will in-turn give each and every one of us (who accept it) our own ip addresses, though probably not before our official national ID cards are trackable via GPS, ect ect.. the government has all kinds of wonderful technology, and they are planning on doing non-other than keeping it for themselves and using it against us, to help them control us though their millitarized police, domesticated cia, ect ect.. Doesn't anybody see what is happening? Think 1984. Think worse than 1984. That NWO picture was not meant to be a joke. They are moving forward with this, and they are using the threat of 'terrorism' to get the people into blindly supporting it all.

I have to agree with Max Headroom's thoughts. The internet won't die, or atleast it shouldn't die, unless of course they decide to pay one of the hackers they got working for them to write the ultimate virus (which for all we know could already be waiting on the side)..sure, aslong as there are still some independent providers this internt will remain to some degree, but the government can easilly afford to buy out all the major isp's and so forth (probably with your tax dollars I might add, which they are generally hogging for themselves and using against you already anyway, ie war on drugs, and especially the fraud they tend to call national security), at any rate, they are afraid of alot of the information that is on this internet which is obviously why they are seeking to control every aspect of it.

I'm surprized more of you guys don't seem in the least concerned over what they are trying to build here. I know I am, this is why I am here trying to spread the word. Fuck the NWO and all of those murderous ass raping, owl god worshipping, deceptive peice of shit coward buffoons who are selling us their ultimate fantasy of controlling every aspect of our lives into some kind of purely mindless industrial prison-complex, FEMA camp filled, microchipped based society.

Sure, it's easier to ignore it all and pretend it's not happening, but I am here to tell you that it is happening, and I don't see why you shouldn't be feeling terrified and thereby motivated to say NO to this undeniable global movement towards tyranny.

I think what Mr. Whitehead is talking about is Internet as used by business to support their day to day operations and the problems with maintaining a secure, high availability service via the public Internet in a very headline grabbing way.

Its also a thinly veiled sales pitch for his companies MPLS/IP VPN products.

I think he may be also hinting at providing more in-built security in its Internet access products, such blocking known signatures such as Worm scans, and specific 'walled garden' services such as telephony and video on demand, which the public Internet is simply not structured to support on a large scale.

I am sure what he is talking about here is a plug for IP VPN, their new VoIP network rather than a New Internet Order

However BT's policy of blocking access to sites, gives me more cause for concern. They claim the be only blocking access to sites containing child porn, which I have no problem with. However, the block list is secret, and this block appears as a network error rather than an explicit block, at least in China or Saudi they tell you its blocked rather than pretend there is some fault.

The new world wide web order will likely prove to be synonymous with the new world order.
