Strangeness, and a Need for More Expert Advice
    #3195015 - 09/29/04 11:57 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I posted this on the basic cultivation board, but can't get any responses. I have a pretty wierd question and those here may have some aanswers. So I will post what has been placed on the other post, leaving out uneccesary stuff.

During my strange psychedelic bender last week on something in the neighborhood of ten grams of very blue shrooms, I did a totally wierd thing. I can kind of remember doing it, but I have no clude as to why I did it. I have been putting my birthed caked into a thirty gallon aquarium and growing shrooms in there. I had worked through most of the necessary trial and error of growing shrooms via cakes, and had about five cakes left inside of the aquaruim that had been through about their first flush. But somehow I go the idea to do something very wierd. I have a vague memory of doing all this but have no idea what motivated me. At any rate, I awoke to find that I had put nearly everything in my house even slightly associated with drug paraphanelia, or alchohol into the tank.

This included all my empty shroom syringes,; a two foot high male marijuana plant I was growing (I think the males are pretty, and I like the big leaves.), two empty scotch bottles (Johny Walker Red) an empty wine bottle (a perfectly lovelyand very dry French red miraculously priced at only twelve dollars), an eighth of some kind bud, a mini-hooka, 100 grams worth of red phosphorous, a bottle of reagant grade iodine and a large beaker from back when I was attempting to make meth (I am sooooooooooo happy I never succeeded in that insane plot, a bi-polar maniac wont to binge on drugs when they are about does NOT need to be hooked on that drug), a cheap electronic scale, and sundry other goodies. And all was mixed up into a pile.

Well, the cakes were buried in dirt from the pot plant, so I gave up on trying to redeem them. I picked out all of the other garbage and threw them all away, heaved a sigh of sorrow and got busy innoculating more cakes. But as a last ditch effort I decided to see if I could imporvise something with what was left of the cakes. So I broke them up into little pieces and covered them with miracle grwo soil, and put in the rest of my vermiculite and rice after I was done with the new cakes. I looked around my pad for other stuff that might have "nutritiveness" for mushrooms and came up with instant oatmeal, I ground up a whole bunch of that into a powder and mixed it up with the soil, rice, vermiculite and cakes. I just decided I would fan it a couple of times a day and see what would happen.

The humidity in my tank is at a good solid 100 percent. And the temperature is staying pretty well between 74 and 78 without me having to do much of anything. This was on Saturday when I started this. It is now Tuesday night and colonies of mycelium are starting to pop up all over the place, and in fact, the entire lump of 'stuff' is covered in a fine misty coat of mycelium.

What then should I do and how should I proceed to potentially harvest mushrooms? Can I be hopeful of mushrooms? Or does it just sound like something infinitely bizarre? What are folks thoughts? Taking for granted by the way that what I have done with the combination of all the wierd stuff (glass bottles, meth chemicals, etc.) was totally bizarre.

Post: Is it cobweb mold?

Answer: Nope, no way no-how.

Just to make sure, I went and took a chunk of the stuff out of the tank and took it away from the tank so that I could smell it. The tank has a kind of sour smell to it, I am assuming it is the otameal. So I wanted to get the stuff away from the tank to get a better idea. The chunk has that very distinctive "mushroomy" smell to it...that smell you get from cakes when they are first birthed.

During my perusing of the board, I remember someone saying that in a casing one doesn't want the mycelium to get too thick or else it causes problems. I am wondering if my little experiment is something along the lines of a casing, and if what I should do to get the thing to start making shrooms. I have wondered if it is making mycelium so fast because the cakes had already been fruiting and had procued their aborts. They were producing nice stately looking shrooms. Maybe???? I just dont know. I am barely beyond the beginner stage in this hobby. So I am kind of at a loss as to how to proceed.

Post: Sour semll is bad and means contamination, do an outdoor grow and see what happens

Answer - I live in an Apt, so I can't really do the outside grow. But I do not think that they are contaminated. I woke up this morning and did a fan. I take my sixteen inch fan and blow everything out of there. When I do that, I am left only with that sweet mushroomy smell. The mycelium grows by the hour. There is a ton more of it now than even when I went to bed. I really need advice on how to continue.

Shoney

Another thought that I have is that maybe since the oatmeal is all mixed up with a bunch of miracle grow soil, maybe it is micking an outdorr grow to some degree. But this is just a thought. I just really don't kow what to do next.

not much else to do but wait and see i guess..

i've seen stranger things..

i dropped a cake in a used flower pot and covered it with a 2 year old bag of soil from a VERY DIRTY basement.. and ended up 1 big shroom ! go figure.

keep up with the fanning, don't let that air go stale, if the white i spreading VERY fast it could be the start of green mold... you'll know shortly if it is !

I'd suggest adding some hydrated lime or, if you can't find that, gypsum. Most store bought soils (especially if they have fertilizers in them) are rather acidic, which green mold *loves.*

If you didn't sterilize the oatmeal before adding it, your odds of contam'ing out are very very high. There's still hope though.

Next time, mix all the substrate together and then put the soil on top to act as a casing layer. The myc is going to have to colonize through all the soil to get at the oatmeal bits and other clumps of myc to form the mycellial network....

Honestly, man, keep your fingers crossed, but don't be too suprised if it dies. I'd start incubating some more cakes pronto.

The reason why you put all your drug related stuff into the aquarium while you were tripping is because you decided that you were going to quit using drugs and you decided to throw it all away. When you came down you changed your mind.

You probably have contamination. P. cubensis mycelium does not grow that fast.
