Sniffer Dogs??
    #3194478 - 09/29/04 02:49 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I saw a tv programme the other day about how these guys go out all day hunting for truffles in woodland, they manage this with the help of a dog that has been trained to search out for truffles specifically.
Does/has any one know/heard of this method being used to find shrooms - it just seems like such an obvious way of hunting! and on the offchance that someone does know anything about this, do you know which breed of dog would be most suited to this?

I've read that they're using dog now more and more than the traditional pigs because dogs aren't tempted to eat the pricy morsels as pigs are.
While it is conceivable that you could use dogs to hunt out the desirable 'shrooms that we all know and love, I've never heard of them being used for this purpose before...

Any dog could really be used, but they usually stick to the mid-sized "hound" type dogs, those used for normal hunting that are easily trainable and like to go find things

Hunting for mushrooms above ground is a different deal, and I haven't heard of dogs being used for this purpose. Since mushrooms are so picky about the environment in which they live, just do some research and find out exactly what kind of conditions the mushrooom you like lives in, and then go find that environment. Not too hard, and once you've trained your eyes, you'll see mushrooms everywhere!

Best of luck hunting
