Video games for enlightenment
    #3184745 - 09/27/04 12:22 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

When somebody goes through the "honeymoon" phase of playing super bomberman 5 with 5 human players simultaneously, they'll play for six hours at a time and when they go to bed and close their eyes, all they can see is a grid with little bombermen running around.

You've probably noticed this in the early rounds of any serious video game playing.. things like running around corners like you're still playing doom, or sizing up cars for jacking after a GTA binge.

I'm just wondering if anybody thinks this effect of video games could be exploited to produce shamanic or other altered states. Maybe you could use video games before bed to induce lucid dreams. Maybe you could use the mindstate created after a specially designed game to make the player a robotically efficient worker or number-shuffler* for a short amount of time.

Or maybe you could play a super awesome 3D flight simulator where you fly through a digital version of your personal anatomy shooting up cancerous tumours. This could focus you and aid in your mind over matter and maybe cure shit. The game box would have to be hooked up taking constant measures of your vitals and sampling your blood which would then be interpreted by your computer and help create the video game universe more accurate. Like your blood pressure would affect movement in the blood stream, and the ratio of white and red blood cells as well as cholesteraol and lung capacity would make a difference. This way you could also keep up with an accurate representation of your condition. Such a game would probably the most effective method for mind over matter and totally settle the issue. That would be the reeeeaaal deal yo

Print that out as a sticker and put it in all the public bathrooms you use. I'm gonna print 100 of them, but modified for black and white, and I'll put them in 100 public bathrooms.

*such a job may not exist

ya dude, like omfg that is so liek cool...

any ways, I have been like that once or twice with my Warcraft 3 footmen frenzy 0wnage... if i actually dream of a video game, that is when I cut back and start doing something else... but in honesty, my dream world is kinda like a video game at times, my subconscious puts a quarter in and my mind get to battle it out( hypothetically

Cool idea !
Anybody familiar with a game called `Promised Land` ?
It`s been released by Queensryche ( the band )and there`s a lot of the band members` take on philosophy in it.
In each world you have to solve a riddle so that you can gather a part of a symbol.
One challenge taught me a lesson for sure: you had to get out of a subway train after reading a plan. Now, whatever you did the doors juyt wouldn`t open. I had tried everything from using reason to simply smashing the windows, but it didn`t help.
So finally the right station appeared and I just did...nothing. There actually was nothing left to try.
Guess what - the doors opened and on you go to the next level.
Like I said, taught me a lot !

I'm dead serious. I just happen to be entertaining at the same time.

I don't know about that, but I learned the basics of interpersonal relationships by playing Doom.

I've been playing zelda 2: the adventure of link for NES these days. Not very refined, but not bad at aaaaaaall. Nothing beats 5 player bomberman, though, that's the bottom line. It's neurotic chess on speed for the ADHD.

This is why I'm training to become a 3d modeler/animator for games. It seems to me that games are the future of entertainment/propaganda/communication. No other art form is as interactive as games. Great things lie ahead for the games industry and society...

It was video games that interested me in programming. The capability to create alternate realities in simulation fills a need that initially attracted me to hallucinogens. Within the next 20 years we will have the capability to create electronic realities that challenge our modes of thought and have the capability to alter our world view in a manner much more specific than hallucinogens are capable. This is due to the amount of control it is possible to exert over a simulation, as opposed to the freeform nature of the entheogenic experience. At this point I would be little surprised to see laws evolve to control the content of these simulations to counter possible threats to the status quo.

For the record, people, if you haven't played "The New Tetris" (N64) on a hit of good acid, you haven't lived.
