Unintentional. Now what?
    #319436 - 05/17/01 02:23 PM (23 years, 8 months ago)

Here's the problem:

I have 2 1/2 pint jars that have white strands growing at the bottom. I
realize this is probably a good thing, but I have no idea how to procede...
PleAse HeLp!

The story:

24 days ago my procrastination gene was non functional and I scraped 2
different prints (strains) into 2 different jars of what I thought was
steralized, bottled spring water. Steralized in microwave for 10 min in
250ml glass jars with plastic lids.

I used about 1/2 of each mixture to innoculate about 15 jars each. (Jars BWF
and Bird Seed steralized in microwave for 15 min.)

So I stored the 1/2 full spore and (supposably sterile water) mixture jars
away for future use.

The innoculated jars are coming along as expected. About 1/2 colonized, a
little slow but the temp. is a little low 75.

I origionally posted this to alt.drugs.mushrooms and got a reply that I could use my leftover spore-water to innoculate more jars. Is there something better I could do with it.

Is this mycelium suspension ?

live near a cowfield?? take it outside and drip it under bushes, throw it on the lawn after mowing, near any recent landscaping, tree planting or near a river that has some recent erosion etc. by spreading the spores in your area you can literally have these spores spread all over the county and from there who knows.

btw water in bottles is not sterile if you have opened the bottle. this is why syringes are loaded with water then pressure cooked rather than just sucking up water out of a bottle of distilled. it sounds like your water was ok if youre getting mycellium growth but be careful, bottled doesnt equal sterile. and i believe that suspension would be mycelium floating in water such s a mycelium syringe. specifically what is going on is spore germination > mycelium colonization. hope it helps!

Unfortuniatly no I don't live near a cow fieild (I'm as serious as u). I didn't use bottled water as you should have read but used Water I got from wat I figured was a non poluted river and boiled it for 2 hours before putting it in the jars that I wasgoing to scrape the spores into then microwaved the pre-steralized water and jars let cool and added spores. Nice sentence. Been doing some reading (lots) think I have it figured out for now. Just going to innoculate more jars. Thanks anyway.

Is there an easy (least complicated) way to make agar (plates)?

I think the least complicated way to make plates is to use the short wide-mouth 1/2 pint jars. You can sterilize the jars pre-poured, then just swish the media around afterward to recombine the ingredients.

Do you already have your agar ingredients?

Have jars, no ingredients. I read somewhere how to do it (pdy) by boiling potatoes. . In canada . may have a problem with time or customs ordering before anyone suggest fungi perfect etc. Home made instructions or a pointer to would be perfect.

Have the jars with plastic and/ or metal lids and some equipment. But don't have the ingredients ord know how. Read somewhere about boiling potatoes (dpy I think.. lost the link). In Canada so customs and/or time might be a problem before anyone suggests fungi perfect ect.

A home grown method for producing agar and what exactly to do would be much much appreciated. or a pointer to the right direction.

I recently read some posts about using flour paste as an agar substitute.  Maybe do a search for 'paste'??  I think it was Dark Savior that was talking about it.  Sounds like that tek would fit your needs perfectly.

The PDY formula is nice, cause you can eat the potatoes.
