Manure/Compost/Poo Questions
    #3193772 - 09/29/04 01:34 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have a few questions regarding Horse manure based bulk substrates.

1. What is the difference between Horse manure compost and field picked horse poo? I realize some ocntain fungicide, but if it is additive free, what would the difference be?

2. It seems most store bought appears to be horse manure compost. If it is different, is there a way to purchase something which is essentially the same as field picked, but packaged? If so, what would this be called?

3. When field picking dried, non stinky poo, can it be used immediatly? (after pastuerization of course)

4. Is manure synonymous with poo, dung, etc?

5. Does field picked generally out perform Horse manure compost?

6. Can horse manre compost be used the same as horse poo? (i.e. mixed with wheat straw )

Thanks in adavance any and all answers!

1.- Compost is the result of mixed ingredients that through microbial activity, air and humidity become the best substrate for shroom growing. Horse poo is shit of horses.
2.- I don?t think you will get something in a store that is pure horse shit such as the one you can find field picking.
3.- Yes
4.- Yes
5.- You mean by itself? Don?t understand well what you mean.
6.- Usually you don?t need to mix compost with other ingredients once you get it cause compost is made of shit, straw, gypsum...

Thank you for the answers. As for the performnce question, I was wondering about the comparison of compost and horse poo/straw both cased the same (for example 50/50 coir/verm) Performance equlas yeild, colonization speed, contam resistance, etc.)

Compost is better cause you promote beneficial microbial activity, such as actinomyces, that benefits mushroom mycellium while retarding the flourishment of other competitors. Also, the nutrients mushrooms like and are able to eat, are more frecuent in compost than straight shit/straw.
Nice, good, well done compost is not an easy work though.

Does that buffalo manure work just as well as horse manure?

Forget store bought bagged manure (unless it is for gardening use).

If you have a source, hand gathered horse manure - that is well weathered, sun dried, still intact (nuggets & muffins), which has no smell (other than earthy)is the best FREE substrate - around.

It should look like this.

It should crumble & look like this.

If you learn how to use it properly?
You will get lots of these.

Whoever can not take care of himself without that law is both.

If i live i will kill you,
If i die you are forgiven,
Such is the rule of honor..."

so would that buffalo manure from the site above work as well?? And how about sheep manure? A hydro shop around sells 100% sheep manure and is more expensive than any other manure.
