Are these Gymnopilus spectabilis?
    #3192023 - 09/28/04 05:12 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hello again, I got out for a couple of hours today in the pouring rain. These were found in eastern Massachusetts in a large wooded area. I found them on rotting stumps (and some were growing at the base of living trees (I believe pine trees). The gills are a light brown color and seem tightly spaced. The caps (the fully opened ones) are 2 1/2" - 4 1/2" (sorry, I don't have a metric ruler handy so I have to use inches :-)) and an orangy brown color. The caps on the more mature ones are completely flat while the smaller ones have more of a round shape. The spore prints are a rusty brown (the more mature ones didn't give me much of a spore print at all.) The 2 1/2" ones gave me a nice print though. The caps and stems don't seem to bruise at all. They smell just like a normal mushroom (pretty strong on the older ones). I've read that Gymnopilus spectabilis tastes horrible but I obviously have not tried tasting them so I can't tell you anything about that. Hopefully I have given you enough info to give me your thoughts on these. I apoligize for the crappy pics, I'm using a digital video camera with a still picture mode to take the pics (did I mention it doesn't have a flash, LOL). Anyway, thanks for any info you can give me and if these do turn out to be them, how much would I have to take (I've read you need large amounts of these to feel it). Also, what is the high like comparable to commercially bought shrooms that I bought years ago (I know, stupid question not knowing the type I bought but I figured I'd throw it out there.) Take care all, The snake man.

No those are not gyms. There color isn't even close, gyms have orange colored gills and the mushrooms themselves are much more orange.

For your camera do you have a macro mode? Try using that if so.

I agree with SweetLeaf, I don't know what they are, but they aren't gyms.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was hoping, but no luck. I'll figure this out sooner or later. I think my next step is to get a good book to bring with me into the field (or woods in my case.) Thanks again for your help.
