Saddam expected to be executed

Saddam expected to be executed

Beirut, Lebanon, Sep. 27 (UPI) -- Interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said he expects ousted President Saddam Hussein to be sentenced to death for his crimes.

Saddam and his senior aides are to be tried by a special Iraqi tribunal on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

"We believe that Saddam's crimes are numerous and atrocious and as such he would be sentenced to death," in an interview with the Saudi daily al-Sharq al-Awsat, monitored in Beirut, Allawi said.

Allawi played down the uproar evoked by his handshake with Israeli Foreign Minister Sylvain Shalom on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York last week.

"He approached me and we shook hands but did not talk to each other," Allawi said.

"Besides, all are negotiating with Israel, including the Palestinian leadership, so why (can) all others can talk to Israel and we don't have the right to do it?" he asked, adding his government has no right to recognize Israel since it is an interim administration and has more important problems.

While I'm no fan of the death penalty, I can't say I feel sorry for the guy.

I can't wait till Osama Bin Laden is caught and executed - that's a pay per view money maker and it would be the first one I'd willingly fork over cash for. I 'd buy a keg, get some strippers, roast a pig, just make a real party out of it.

In an Iraqi court, Saddam hears charges and scoffs
By Steven Komarow, USA TODAY

BAGHDAD ? A combative and defiant Saddam Hussein refused to accept the charges levied against him Thursday, jabbing his finger toward the Iraqi judge and calling the court appearance a political show designed for President Bush's re-election campaign.
"I am Saddam Hussein, president of Iraq," is how the former Iraqi dictator identified himself Thursday.

"Everyone knows that this is theater by Bush the criminal in an attempt to win the election," said the deposed dictator, wearing a white shirt, dark suit and neatly trimmed beard for the 26-minute appearance. (Related items: Video: Saddam appears in court | Audio: Pool reporter in the courtroom)
Saddam charges

The broad charges Saddam Hussein faces, according to Iraqi authorities at Thursday's hearing. Specific charges will be filed later:

Killing of religious figures in 1974;

Gassing of Kurds in Halabja in 1988;

Killing the Kurdish Barzani clan in 1983;

Killing members of political parties in the last 30 years;

The 1986-88 "Anfal" campaign of displacing Kurds;

The suppression of the 1991 uprisings by Kurds and Shiites;

The 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Source: Associated Press

It was the first public appearance for the 67-year-old former president since U.S. troops pulled him, wan and defeated, from an underground hiding place in December. But at times on Thursday, he showed the defiance he was known for. Asked to identify himself, he said, "I am Saddam Hussein, president of Iraq."

The arraignment of Saddam and 11 former lieutenants was only the beginning of a prosecution that is expected to last for many months. He will eventually face a special tribunal appointed to try top regime members.

An Iraqi judge was in charge of the courtroom located on a U.S. base. Saddam was flown there by helicopter from an undisclosed site and delivered in an armored bus escorted by four Humvees and an ambulance. He was flanked by two Iraqi guards and was ushered into the building by six more Iraqi police.
Details of alleged crimes

Some of the major crimes allegedly committed during Saddam's rule:

July 16, 1979: Shortly after Saddam seizes power, 15 top party leaders who allegedly conspired against him are executed.

1980: Iraqi forces invade neighboring Iran, sparking an eight-year war that leaves an estimated 1 million dead. Chemical attacks against Iran kill as many as 5,000.

1983: Government launches campaign against members of Kurdish Barzani tribe for helping Iran launch offensive in northern Iraq. Estimated 8,000 killed, many buried in mass graves.

1986-88: Scorched-earth offensive known as "Anfal" that includes chemical attacks on Kurds. Estimated 180,000 Kurds killed, many buried in mass graves in south.

1988: Chemical weapon attack against Kurdish town of Halabja kills an estimated 5,000 civilians.

1990: Saddam orders invasion of Kuwait on Aug. 2; Iraqi forces fire Scud missiles at Israel and Saudi Arabia; Iraqi soldiers allegedly torture, summarily execute hundreds of Kuwaitis and set Kuwaiti oil wells ablaze.

1991: Some 60,000 people are believed killed when Saddam crushes rebellions by Shiite Muslims in the south and Kurds in the north at close of Gulf War.

1992: Draining of marshes in southern Iraq, driving population known as Marsh Arabs from homes and wiping out way of life. Tens of thousands killed.

1996: Two of Saddam's sons-in-law are killed after they return from Jordan, where they fled and exposed the campaign to hide banned weapons.

Sources: The Associated Press, Human Rights Watch

Handcuffed, with a chain around his waist, Saddam wore a blue jumpsuit. He changed before entering the courtroom into a pinstriped suit off the rack from a Baghdad store, and his handcuffs were taken off inside, where he sat facing cameras.

The Iraqi judge initially read Saddam his rights, which the former dictator refused to acknowledge until he has legal counsel. Instead, Saddam warned the judge not to be the tool of an occupation force and to remember instead that he works for the Iraqi people.

Saddam's short performance Thursday may offer a preview of his defense at his eventual trial.

Hearing the charge that he ordered the gassing of thousands of Kurds in an attack at Halabja in 1988, Saddam shrugged it off, saying he had heard of the incident through the media.

He said the invasion of Kuwait could not be a crime because he was retaking a part of Iraq and because the Kuwaiti "dogs" were trying to turn Iraqi women into "10-dinar prostitutes."

Iraqis watched the hearing on television, intent on seeing how the man who ruled the country with absolute authority for 25 years would appear as a defendant in a courtroom. "He still talks like a president," said medical equipment engineer Adam Shinewi, 26, in Baghdad.

Afterward, the 11 other defendants appeared one by one to hear the charges. Most of the 11 others appeared tired, broken men, shadows of their former roles as masters of the Iraqi nation.

Interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said he expects ousted President Saddam Hussein to be sentenced to death for his crimes.

Not too surprising. This quisling cocksucker Allawi seems quite keen on executions..

US Media Kills Story that Iraqi PM Executed 6 Prisoners
by Khalid Hasan

WASHINGTON: The US media has surprisingly failed to pick up the shocking disclosure by Sydney Morning Herald, Australia?s leading newspaper, that the Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi personally executed six suspected insurgents in a Baghdad police station.

The story by award-winning Australian journalist Paul McGeough said that the prisoners were handcuffed and blindfolded, lined up against a courtyard wall and shot by the Iraqi PM. Dr Allawi is alleged to have told those around him that he wanted to send a clear message to the police on how to deal with insurgents. Two people allege they witnessed the killings and there are also claims the Iraqi interior minister and four American men were present.

An Australian television channel interviewed the reporter who is in Iraq telling him that the Allawi family had denied the story. He replied, ?Well it?s a very contentious issue. What you have is two very solid eyewitness accounts. Each witness is not aware that the other spoke.?

The Australian journalist said, ?Well, I?ll take you through what the two witnesses said to give you the full chronology as I understand it. There was a surprise visit at about 10:30am to the police center. The PM talked to policemen and then toured the complex. They came to a courtyard where six, sorry seven prisoners were lined up against a wall. They were blindfolded, they were described to me as an Iraqi colloquialism for the fundamentalist foreign fighters who came to Baghdad. They have that classic look that you see with many of the Osama Bin Laden associates of the scraggly beard and the very short hair and they were a sort of ... took place in front of them as they were up against this wall was an exchange between the interior minister and Dr Allawi, saying that he felt like killing them on the spot.

The interior minister expressed the wish that he would like to kill all these men on the spot. The PM is said to have responded that they deserved worse than death. At that point, he is said to have pulled a gun and proceeded to aim at and shoot all seven. Six of them died, the seventh, according to one witness, was wounded in the chest. On the incident date, the correspondent said, ?It happened on or around the weekend of June 19/20 ? three weeks after Dr Allawi was named PM and one week before the handover.?

Killing of religious figures in 1974;

Anyone else find it a little strange that after being assured of the terrible crimes Saddam was committing against his people and that we had to invade to "help" them, they need to dig out crimes from 30 years ago to charge him with?

Nothing from the last 14 years tho.

What's strange about that?

Apart from the crimes being committed during a time Saddam was so close to Reagan and Bush it was dubbed "the love affair"?
