Praying to vanquish your enemies

Whether it is a boxing match (Foreman: "I owe this championship to God."); a football game ("Dear Jesus, Please guide us to victory on the field.") or on the battlefield ("We pray for the safety of our troops and the crushing of the enemy.") this appears to me to be about as far from spirituality that one can get and a strong endorsement for ego and duality.

I agree. It's like saying, I am more important, and therefore I deserve to win. Obviously this is an extremely narrow and selfish viewpoint, and one not associated with spirituality (atleast in my view).
Nice observation

I think that this would be a great thing in advertising products. If the consumer felt that the product was endorsed by God directly then they might be more inclined to buy that product. One could also play on the feelings of Christians by making them think that if they don't buy the product that they are bad Christians. This would be especially productive if the product was targeted by demographics towards fundamentalist types. Can anyone think up some good slogans? If so, you already got the basis for a business.

Oh yeah...praying on the battlefield might actually work. The Old Testament seems to indicate that God absolutely loves war...I guess it gets pretty boring up there.

praying for victory is lame. win on your own. if you've got to thank some diety, thank them for the opportunity to compete and prove yourself the winner. already a huge market for such things. not in sneakers or shirts exactly, but there's a plethoria of christian-targetted merchandise to be found
most obviously: Bibles. Ever see the price on a bible in a book store? those things are mighty expensive, and I don't really see any of that money going to the purported writer -- god.

I disagree... I think if they said " I would like to thank my awesome sports skills for helping me defeat my weak openents" or " Guide our steel and bullets and mad combat skills to lead us to victory and a swift slaying of the enemy"
how do you claim your examples as ego endorsement... besides, ANYTHING is ego endorsment, especially this thread, my reply, and any statement made by a human in the past..

What if you prayed to absolve your enemies, could that be also vanquishing your enemies... or at least construed that way...

It cracks me up when I see an athlete on television point up to the sky or cross themselves.
