Salvaging my newb cakes?
    #3189485 - 09/27/04 11:40 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I ordered 3 strains from a vendor, and before I really got set-up and really informed about the proper way to cultivate, I tried inoculating four 1 pint jars with the Koh Samui strain.

Anyway, they weren't heated properly, the jars were too big, and they are taking way too long.  Of the 4, I think 2 died of heat stroke, either that, or those two jars are entirely colonized, but the mycellium is completly dull yellow... with a few spots of uncolonized verm/BR flour.

The other two jars have colonized about.. I'd say.. a little less than the top half of the jars, with some parts being the dull yellow and other arts being bright white. One even has pins beginning to form.. probably from me checking up on it so much. But I KNOW the cakes must be starting to dry out..

Anyway, I now have a proper terranium and it's been WAY over 20 days for these damn jars, is there any way I can salvage the uncontaminated colonized substrate and transfer it to a fruiting medium so as to not waste?  :mushroom2:

Perhaps dig it out, crumble it up, and put in 1/2 pint jar with more sterilized substrate to make a proper cake, or perhaps in a solo cup with a little moistened verm on top and a plastic baggie for humidity? Just something to try before the texans I am currently properly incubating are ready?

but i thought the dull yellow just meant the mycellium was touching water droplets on the glass? Everythiong else looks ok.. just... taking...too..damn...long

live and learn. the first few grows usually don't go to well. sounds like you have it under control now. you could try to salvage that one in a plastic cup like you said.

mycelium is a living thing and it gives off waste just like the rest of us. sometimes a little discoloration is from this waste. just my 2 cents.

Well, IME haven't seen much waste until way past 20 days....

-When you say that they weren't heated properly do you mean during sterilization or incubation/pinning?  Does it smell sour? :mad2:
