Soaking grain in water with hydrated lime?
    #3188958 - 09/28/04 12:21 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I just put some grain in to soak.  Then I was surfing around and reading a straw tek.  Obviously, I'm going to PC the grain after soak/simmering.  But I was wondering if adding lime would be beneficial in any way to the water it's soaking in?  'K.  Sorry if this is a dumb question.  Ray: "It just popped in there."  Thanks.

it's better to use a little gypsum... I always use it
when I'm using whoe grains and when I do I have
no problems with over wetting and bacteria
as long as I sterilize properly

Where can one buy gypsum suitable for mycological purposes.  What's the  "generic" labeling for this gypsum.  E.G. "Hydrated Lime"  : "_________ Gypsum."
    Thanks!

It's just called gypsum. Found at nusuries and plant places. You only need a little. That's to make them easier to shake though, lime is for adjusting pH. Rye doesn't need this and I dont even know how much that would change it. It could hurt though if you use to much and swing the pH to far. I dont know if hydrated lime is the really stong one but I think it is. I'd go without it. Gypsum couldnt hurt though if you have problems with sticking together grains..I should try some..wonder if it helps when fully colonized breaking it up for casings? I have no problems shaking it but breaking it up could be easier..
