Alternative substrate
    #3187620 - 09/27/04 07:49 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Alright so today at school I found a nice little patch of Panaeolus Subbalteatus growing in the part of the field they just fertilized. I'm making a spore print right now, and will make the spore syringe tomorrow.

Anyway, I can't really make the substrate PF-Tek uses (no vermiculite in town) and I am a little afraid to try noodles (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Growlog&Number=3090561
). What other substrates can I use that I'll probably have on hand (besides dung and hay)?

Rye or wild bird seed or rye grass seed or wood. However I dont know what they grow on and THAT'S what you need to know in order to pick the substrate. Cubies grow on everything (mostly) but other species are more dependant on certain substrates. You should mention the name of the strain in your post so maybe someone with experience on the strain can answer.

Grains
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3264

Next time, refer to the FAQ (  http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3171 )and use the shroomery search engine ( http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php?Cat= ), it makes life easier on all of us.

BTW, I've heard pan subbs  horse dung.

Panaeolus Subbalteatus

See it up there in line 1? It's in the first sentence... I don't mean to sound rude.

Thanks for the advice, I will look into it

BTW they were growing in grass, that had been fertilized by imported dung. That's why I got such an odd strain in SoCal, the spores hitched a ride in the manure

Sorry I'm high and didnt type what I was thinking, I'm aware its in the first sentence. What I meant to say was put it in the subject line, not the post. "Alternative substrates" are asked about all the time and some people skip over common questions and only read ones that they feel they can contribute to from the subject. If you put it in the subject instead of just in the post, it will grab the attention more of someone who has any experience with pan subbs. You werent rude, I just didnt type what I was thinking

Understood :P

I'm thinking in the meantime (until I'm done sterilizing the bird seed) I'll just take a little bit of spore (I have plenty) and put it in a sterilized jar with some of the native cow manure.

Meh, I'll go get the birdseed anyway.

Sunflower seeds in the mix: good or bad?

You'll probably need to clean your prints up with some agar first.
I don't think you're gonna get a sterile print from a wild mushroom.

Are you 100% sure on the I.D.?

I'm 100% sure. It matches the pictures of the Panaeolus Subbalteatus, the gills are the same, the size is correct, the weights are within range, and the sporeprints are jet black, just like the books say.

Sunflower seeds bad. A fews ok but you dont want many. I hear they float to scoop easy. Use rye myself though. I agree with the print cleaning though..I forgot to mention that in the first post. Wild prints generally will not be sterile. Need to knock up a plate of agar and then isolate the mycelium to another plate. The new plate should be clean of any molds or mold spores...you could try some without that but if you get contams then you might need to do some agar work.

Alright the spores have been in the jar for about 8 hours now and I'm not seeing any signs of life.

Should I be worried?

P.S. I'm starting another colony on some grass, I'm not so worried about infection in grass.

8 hours? What in the world grows in 8 hours? Chill and if they aren't colonized in a month then start asking.

Ahh nice

I dug up some of the manure today and brought it home. The jar I have the spores colonizing in is starting to have that shroom smell I'm used to

And I'm not sure why but when my friend grew his shrooms for the first time with Cubensis B it showed first signs of colonization in a day and was fully colonized within 3 weeks.
