Popcorn Smells?
    #3187182 - 09/27/04 06:13 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Well I just finished building Magash's tub in tub incubator, which is working great already. But when I went to move my jars into it, I noticed a very strong odor of popcorn in the trunk where I was originally keeping my jars. The smell isn't bad, but I was wondering if there was supposed to be a smell after the popcorn had been soaked, rinsed and pressure cooked (I know sometimes contamination has a very distinct odor and I was just curious).

Thanks for any help.

Is that to say that cooked popcorn smells like shit? Because when I just opened up my incubator the smell was EXTREMELY strong (it just smells like cooked popcorn, but it's overwhelming without the top on). I was getting nervous that the jars were fermenting or something.

So is the smell to be expected?

Yeah, popcorn smells strongly anyways. It's smell is actually stronger than that of cofee.

I remember my assistant manager at Starbucks saying that his training taught him not to let people come in with popcorn because the smell of the kernals would disrupt the atmosphere.

Yeah but this isn't popped popcorn smell, this is boiled corn going on fermenting smell. I let the corn soak for 24 hours, then I boiled for like an hour or so, rinsed it with cold water and loaded it into quart jars that were pressure cooked for an hour each at 15 psi.

I did everything according to the various teks, and I practiced sterile techniques, so I can't figure out what's up. This is my first time with a pressure cooker though (I've only done BRF and vermiculite before this).

So I'm slightly worried at this point.

So far there isn't any.

The jars were inoculated two days ago (nine total quarts inoculated with roughly 2 - 2.5 cc's of spores each) and kept in a dark environment that was only room temperature. Today (since there was no growth) I decided I finally needed to get off my ass and build a tub in tub, so I did. The temperature is holding steady right now, so I hope to see some results within a few days.

But now I don't know what the hell is up with the jars.

Wait 2-4 more days to see if growth comes. If nothing comes you know you have a problem.

As a side note, I got some other opinions from friends, and they say the smell isn't as strong as I was making it out to be. If the top is off the incubator you can't smell it from more than a foot away. The smell is strongest right inside the incubator, but I can't tell if it's just normal and I hate the smell or something is wrong.

Haha!

While the smell is not the work of my extremely overactive imagination, today when I checked my jars there was a tiny bit of growth evenly throughout them all. So I guess they're not fucked after all (at least at this point).

Thanks for all the help.
