Newbie needs help?
    #318718 - 05/16/01 04:55 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

My newt recently birthed his first cakes. Four of six survived and things were progressing nicely. The cakes sit inside my newts terrarium where the humidity is right at 90%, temps between 70-75, light for eight hours a day, and fanned thrice a day. Two of the cakes pinned, and one produced ONE single mushroom. The mycelium keeps growing outward (towards the light my newt thinks...he rotates them), and is branching off in every direction. Last week some of the mycelium at the bottom of the cakes turned to a green/blue color and started travelling up the cakes. This was easily removed without damage. I've searched and read nearly every post on humidity related problems to no avail. Does anybody out there in shroom land have a diagnosis of my poor newts problem??? Be kind.

you may have a cobweb mold on the cakes with this type of growth. if they are not growing anything right now try dunking in a half pint jar w/peroxide for 24 hrs. as for the colour on the bottom hopefully its just blueing from dryness or handling. keep an eye on those ones if you see green fuzz chuck them.

it's either the cakes are dry, or "green mold" if it washes off its mold usually. may just be dry cakes. cobweb mold is light grey.
