contamination removal
    #3185760 - 09/27/04 11:51 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Well, after 2 tries I finally have a batch of mold-free (so far) jars, after using the oven tek and various other changes. My question is this, however. I have one jar left over from a previous batch that were all tossed because of green mold. This one lasted a longer than most and is now almost fully colonized. But, about a week ago, I noticed one small spot of green about the size of a pea. Normally I just watched and waited on the other jars and of course it spread. This time I took a spoon, poured alcohol over it and then scooped out the green spot and a good bit of the surrouding good stuff just to make sure. It is now green-free for a week and almost fully colonized. After I did the spoon thing it just took off growth wise like crazy. Is this cake safe to use, consume, etc.?

Are you sure it's just a small spot? Most green molds start growing from the inside outwards.

Actually, all of my other batches when I got green mold, when I emptied the jars (wearing a mask just in case) I always cut through the middle to see if it went through and only the really severely green ones did it go past the surface and even then not bad. I don't think my prob was bad PC, but problems occuring during inoculation. I don't know, problem seems fixed now. But, yeah this jar has been green free for a week since I removed that spot. I had tried it on another jar a few weeks back and the green just kept coming back so I gave up, but this seems to have worked, but I am still wondering if safe.

It's your call man...

I would throw it out ASAP, or atleast seperate it completely from the rest of the group.

Yeah its definitely been separated. I thought that I would at least fruit it for practice, but what exactly are the dangers if these are ingested? As long as they are mold-free is it safe, or not. Sorry, I just really have a need to know how everything works and why, bear with me.

There's a very good chance it's safe. There's a very good chance it's not.

If 25 cents worth of rice and some vermiculite is worth risking serious illness, by all means -- indulge.

It's not that at all. It's just that I want so badly to have one to work out right, to give it a try. I don't want to get sick or make anyone else sick, I just want it to work. Is there any way to tell if they are okay after they grow?

Besides eating it, no. (unless they're visibally fucked up).

Chuck it and start again. Shit happens.

If you're dead set on growing it, break it up and bury it outdoors and check on it in a month.

I method i've used is direct injecting hydrogen peroxide into the jar... works well sometimes, but i've had a few jars that failed to survive!

If you're willing to save that jar, at least try the peroxide method

If there's no more green mold and it doesn't come back, i'd say it's safe to consume the mushrooms.
Btw, did you expose the substrate to open air ?
If you did so, there are more chances contamination might occur.
