Good way to drain grains
    #3183042 - 09/26/04 03:44 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I had this idea, used it, worked great.  Get some screen mesh, for porches, doors, etc.  Cut the mesh to fit your bathtub with enough to run up the sides for you to grab onto.  After rinsing the grain, dump onto the mesh and spread out.  Let it dry for 30 minutes or so.  Hope this helps someone

Why not just load it into jars and PC it.. sounds like a waste of time.

Maybe it's not for all grains. Works with popcorn & cracked corn.

I agree with this method. It IS an excellent and easy to clean up when working with grains. It is simple and works...

Soak it...

Pile it onto one of these...

Rinse and let drain...

Load it...

How much easier does it get? no cooking time or temp or water level... minimal cleanup... great results every time.

I'm told mold endspores can survive a PC'in, thats why you soak the grain first to get rid of em.

Sounds like a fairly decent method, I may give it a try.

Whatever floats your boat. You could always load your jars, then let them sit for 24 hours, then PC them.

Yes, I have heard this method works with success... although, when I see the stank brown water left after soaking grains for 12 hours, I get the urge to rinse that nastiness out... I wouldn't want to ingest that nastiness ... nor would I want my fruits too... Whatever works for you IMO

Its really funny how everyone is so paranoid of endospores, but I have found this information stating that Pressure Cooking kills EVERY form of life, including endospores.

yea i did... i guess i was confused when you replayed to [RE:Pshawny] i also think its a waste of time. im a fan of loading the jars and letting them sit for about 12-16 hours and PCing them, not so much cuz i want to let them sit over night but cuz i do so many jars after school i dont have time to pc them all in one day

thats true to an extent but the steam at 15 psi is at 250 F it takes a good hour to kill 99% of endospores in grian at that temp
One endospore will multiply a million times in 24 hours
and those million a million more each in the next 24

so if one endospore survives !!!!

by soaking you hope that 1% thats not going to die will germinate first

I never had a contam problem that wasnt from post PC sterility problems. Everything dies with a good hour PC. And if any organisims do live they cause no problem to the fungus.

IMO Soaking is WAY over rated and a waste of time. not to mention is very messy.

Soaking is done to allow the endospores to germinate, making them easier to kill when pc'ing.I find that an overnight soak(12-14hrs)works great.
Simmering is done to add the water content.
I also use a piece of screen or a collander(strainer) to drain and rinse my grain.

How long do you simmer and what is the water/grain ratio. What heat level do you simmer? How do yoyu know when the water content is perfect?
