BRF into Casing?
    #3184317 - 09/27/04 12:19 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have been reading and reading and now have a question. I have invested in vermaculite and BRF for my first time grow. But, the more I keep reading the more I want to grow with cases rather than cakes. But, I read on people using grains to make cases. Can you use BRF cakes to make cases with mabye vermaculite or even poo. What would you suggest as a good substrate layer for BRF? Thanks for any help.

After your cakes are fully colonized use verm/coir to case them.  Check in "Mushroom Info >> Growing Mushrooms >> Advanced Techniques >> Casing" for information on casings.  I recommend Casing 101, as it seems to be the easiest to follow.

It's up on the top bar of the webpage.

i wouldn't really personally reccomend vermiculite for casing PF cakes. it compares poorly with the 60/40 coir/vermiculite, IME. i think it has a harder time getting through the substrate, so it takes longer to colonize.

Hyphae did you spawn it onto something else? That seems like a large casing for just a pint of substrate.

Hey Hyphae... you toss out some nice casings. I have a question for you. I know that deeper casings provide larger mushrooms. Do you find it more advantageous to do thinner casings? How do they differ in your experience?

I go with somewhat thick substrates one and a half to two inch substrate depths are sufficient for several nice flushes. I've also done 4in. substrate depths with WBS and have gotten slightly more yield and those flushed up to 8 times. But on average 2in. seems to me to be the most efficient. Put it this way if you had one tray with 4in. substrate depth and two trays with 2in. substrate depth the two tray would out produce the single tray by a wide margin!

So keepng a good two inch depth and increasing the surface area of a casing will yield significantly more than thicker casings. Good to know. Thank you.

Hyphae, you are my hero... well maybe I wouldn't go that far but that's some really useful information right there!

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...part=1&vc=1

This was 12 PF jars cased with verm. One large casing, substrate around 2". 700g fresh on one flush, didn't hold onto the casing after that :frown: I'm sure a couple more decent flushes would have come up

Maybe coir/verm is better for casing, but I had no problem with this result

go for it, that was my first time
