I wish psychedelic mushrooms were legal, because I would like to indulge in this amazing fruit of the earth. Unfortunately, I can only learn about this interesting hobby, and cultivate legal mushrooms.

You can just let them sit until they show roots or plant them now. If you plant them now don't give them any water right away. Let them sit at least a couple weeks in dry soil. They won't need any direct sun until they root but they will want light. When they start to root you can water them but don't keep the soil wet all the time. Let it dry out between waterings. When you see they are growing give them some ferts. I use peter's 20 20 20 but you can use other ferts.

Roots will start to pop out yes. You'll notice tiny bumps coming out at the bottom within 2 weeks probably. But, at least for me they don't get any bigger than this until you pot them in some soil. Get some cactus soil and stick em in. Don't water for a few weeks. (in 4-6 the roots should be sturdy enough)

Hmm, how many inches of cutting is required to plant?

6-8" works fine. I tried to go as small as 2.5" horizontal logs but it didnt work for me.

I've rooted little bitty cuttings as small as a couple inches long and not very fat. A fat log will almost always root even if it's just a few inches long. These things thrive on neglect. Over watering is often a cause of problems. In general, the larger the cutting the better the chances it will root ok.
