Air Exchange During Incubation
    #3182309 - 09/26/04 01:35 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have nine jars of popcorn that were inoculated last night. The jars have poly-fil inserted in each of the lids for increased air exchange during incubation.

Since my incubator leaves something to be desired I was wondering if I cover the jars with a blanket will that decrease air flow to an undesirable rate?

Thanks for the help.

Ok, screw it. I've been putting it off for too long anyway.

I'm just going to build a tub in tub, per Magash.

air flow during colonization isn't all that important......the high CO2 levels are necesary to keep it in vegitative condition.

Just a lil flilter disk, or whatever, is sufficient.

And def go with a tub in tub, they're simple, fairly inexpensive, and very effective.

Yes you want high levels of co2 during incubation. I'd even throw foil over the tops of those jars it won't hurt a thing! I don't like using blankets at all they're contam hotels! TnT is the way to go no doubt about it.

A well cleaned blanket is sometimes necessary to insulate a tub in tub tho.....

and since it's outside the actual chamber, it shouldn't be a problem
Filter apparatus (filter discs, polyfill, etc) are generally effective at keeping out atmospheric contaminants.

Why would it be necessary sometimes unless your using too small a heater? It really doesn't matter a whole hell of a lot but it's just introducing something that could cause problems as some peeps won't be using a cleaned blanket and having it the vicinity just goes against by better judgement plus the fact that I've never seen one used in a lab not that a closet is a lab or anything. My recommendation is don't use one if you don't really need too thats all take it or leave it don't matter to me. GL guys

what do you guys mean by "filter disks" what are these?

and I'm using the tub-in-tub method, can I use it for incubation and fruiting also? I would think that higher temps would be better for fruiting too.. and instead of a blanket, can't I just keep a lid on top? that should keep heat in...

When im incubating I follow the PFtek up until the mycelium growth starts to slow, then i take a large sterilized tubberware container and put the jars into it,and i take the tape off the holes and put the lid on the tubberware. Seems to work pretty well.

What I say on the posts is not true!!I never grew, ingested,or distributed mushrooms of any kind.In fact I don't even know what a mushroom is.

how do you sterilize a tupperware container? IME tupperware bins can't fit into my 23QT PC, and I can tell that just by looking.

I fill a spray bottle with 50% water and 50% 70% rubbing alcohol for just such occasions. Casing containers get the same before being used. Wipe down with clean paper towels.

Thank you! and what about lysol? is this good for it or has some no good chemicals that would be harmful?

Lysol works. Gotta be carful, it can cause some stuff to happen, just make sure you wipe it up well first. I still trust alcohol more too btw.

Is there any way someone might be able to post the complete tub in tub tek again? I did a search but the thread looks incomplete.

Tyvek.  You can get it from the post office for free usually.

Heat is good for incubation.  You have to drop your temperature by  around 10 degrees to initiate pinning.  I don't see how there would be a benefit by raising the temperature back up to 86 again afterward.
