How much better are yields when casing as opposed to cakes?
    #3178860 - 09/25/04 12:29 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Ive grown my first grow on cakes as suggested and was a little disappointed with the yield. After seeing some pics of some KICK-ASS casing Im wondering how much more do you get off a casing, is it worth the while?

Alot better, especially with grains. One quart jar from liquid innoculation is done in 10 days, makes 1 casing that produces about (average) 20 grams for 3 flushes and then a few more smaller flushes with really big shrooms. Your talking almost 3 ounces after a month and a half from a 1 quart casing. This is if you do it right and I find its better to take the 2 ounces after the first month and toss but still..good yeilds from casings and grains! Much quicker too for what you get from cakes, look into it.

Cakes I hear you get like a quarter off the thing total? Even figuring 4 cakes probably will get you an ounce (4 cakes is about a quart of substrate, talking 1/2pints here, probably more substrate too) thats pretty crappy yeilds. I've never heard anyone say they went from cakes to casings but got more from cakes so are going back to them

Very true... Millet provides so much more nutrient value that brf cakes. IME grains (especially millet) produce higher yields, higher potency and a quicker method. The only trick is, the more exposure the substrate has, the more steps in the process, the higher the risk for contamination.

Yeah I wouldnt count on that either especially using cakes..I got 3 ounces off my first two casings (first attempt at growing period) each..maybe I got lucky. They were 1 1/2 quarts each too.. Now I dont even keep them long enough to get that but yeah..grains rock..read up and follow what the masters say exactly and you shall prosper..then dont stop reading  Big yeilds can be gotten from little casings..

Hey, I've got 1/2 cup Gladware containers (4 oz.) because I couldn't find the 8 oz. ones. Are these too small to use for the PF tek? I was thinking since they're smaller they will colonize faster, and I'll be able to make them into casings faster. Is this a good assumption, or should I go out and try to find the 8 oz. Gladwares? I only plan on making casings out of them, and maybe saving a couple to fruit right out of the container.

Can I Just make a small indoor greenhouse instead of using bins to fruit in? What do you use to create humidity? is there fans running inside? Looks like Hyphae would know!
PM me with any help or information!
thank you

Greenhouse would work along with a ultrasonic and/or coolmist humidifier or simpler yet a Poor Mans Pod/PMP

building a small greenhouse is a lot more complicated and expensive than $4.99 plastic tubs from Wal-Mart.....

You can get them for $22 at Menards and they hold a hell of alot more than a tub.

But then you also gotta buy the humidifers (both is best) and timer for ultrasonic and then more lights then for just a little tub..then theres the shelves..and all the substrate to fill the shelves. Of course that leaves all them mushrooms to fill the shelves too which leaves all of them mushrooms to fill your wallet with what it costed for them humidifiers and such (and dont forget dehydrators if you got all them shroomies).

Hyphae..whats in those casings as far as strain, substrate and how much/thickness? Those are some really big mushies if they aren't on poo/straw/manure or something..

Orissa pins on straw/horse poo/spawnmate nocced with milo/millet/cracked corn/corncob/brf. The trays were cased with a 60% non-nutritional soiless potting mix(sphagnum peat moss, fine vermiculite, and perlite) and 40% coarse vermiculite with a handful of crushed oyster shell. Moistened, covered and baked in oven till a core temp. of 170F was maintained for 2 hours. Some people like to pile the substrate thicker in which case these trays wouldn't work for them, but my friend maintains that a 1 1/2'' to 1 3/4'' substrate depth, properly supplimented, cased 1/4''-1/2" thick, is sufficient for 3-4 flushes of good sized fruits. Plus, if contams were to take hold in one tray, it can be easily removed, saving the remainder of the harvest. They fit nicely three to a shelf on the plastic shelving one sees at Walmart and are easy to handle and care for. Sort of a modular system.

Interesting. I actually have two of the shelves thats in the closet there  Wish they made the shelves a bit closer together to get another shelf in there. Ah well  Wow..all that stuff mixed in there huh? Is that the usual thing to use? Interesting that it's so thin too and gives off all them shrooms. It's amazing what experienced cultivators can do...

Also what about them casing containers..I've been interested in those..they look like planters but I havn't been able to find large ones like that. All the planters I can find have holes in the bottom as well. This seems to me like it would become a problem with stuff falling out of the holes and contams so I never used them though they would be perfect size..so any info on what I can look for to find these ones?

Those flats were from afoaf whom I believe works in a greenhouse. The trays have slits in the bottoms were there was actually shrooms growing from the slits, quite a few if I'm remembering correctly
