Making door lightproof
    #3177390 - 09/24/04 11:15 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Okay... I know this is a pretty sad question.. but. Does anyone know an easy way to seal the cracks on the side of a door so that no light can escape and be seen from outside (ie a closet). Something that isn't permanent and can be removed without any damage... ideas would be great! thank you!

I don't know for sure if this will work but... A thick heavy blanket and either pin it to the wall or put a nail or two to hold it up.

Forget the contam hotel (blanket). Weather stripping is what I always use for grow cabinets and there are no light leaks. GL

A really easy way of making a non permentant light seal around a door is to use sticky velcro.
1.) Get a few pieces of thick black fabric that are a good 3-4" inches bigger than the door frame (all the way around - more at the bottom is good).
Sew layers of black fabric togehter so you can treat it like one piece of fabric.

2.)Attach one side of the sticky velcro to the door frame (the outer edge of door frame). If you're going be opening the door/ light seal fairly regularly you might also want to staple gun the velcro to the door frame to keep it in place.

3.)Attach the other side of the sticky velcro to the fabric, measuring and making sure the two pieces of velcro line up, so that the fabric smoothly stretches across to cover the entire door - and over any cracks around the door. It shouldn't be tight, just fit nicely.

4.)Sew the sticky velcro onto the fabric for extra security.
Simply pull the black pannel off whenever you want access and smooth it back on after!

I used exactly the same set-up for many years in my darkroom - which was a VERY sunny laundry the rest of the time. If the seal has to be super light proof add a layer of black plastic between two layers of fabric (don't just use black plastic as the holes from the sewing machine needle will let light through). Naturally have a think if you want it sealed from the inside or outside.

Hmm in terms of keeping it contam free? Making the curtain solely out of black plastic and glueing the sticky velcro in place could work, haven't tried it but i'm sure it would be fine.

I use weather stripping as well around my closet. 3 lights in there and no light comes through. It's got a sticky back you just peel the paper off and stick it. It comes up fairly easy (if you pull at it) but won't just fall off to easy.

I weather stripping the spongy tube looking things with adhesive on one side? About cm in diameter? You stick it in the cracks of the door frame to help insulate the inside? If It is that is what I was thinking about getting but didn't know if it would work...Glad to hear it does If it is what I am thinking about

As if this needed follow up...  Yes, scatmanrav provided the 100% perfect easy, non-permanent solution to this.  Fat ass thick weather stripping and a self adhesive door sweep... Blocks 100% of all light.  Quick and easy.  Just thought I'd supply some feedback.
