Slightly OT - Has anyone grown bioluminescent mushrooms?
    #3177112 - 09/25/04 12:17 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

These things have been fascinating me for some time, and now you can order the spores and grow your own. The procedure is slightly different than our other mushrooms. I was wondering if anyone has had any success with these things? I just think they're so neat.

So do those actually look like that at night, or do they need to be looked at under a black light or something?

If that's true then I really want to grow them.

Are there any detailed teks on how to? What sort of substrate do they live on?

It looks as if they're wood loving fungi. Im trying to figure out what areas these grow in though. Having a hard time.

Myco - It's absolutely true!  Isn't that awesome?  Just to clarify - bioluminescent organisms make their own light and really glow in the dark,  luminescent organisms are the ones that glow in ultraviolet light.  Did you know that there are even certain clams, centipedes, millipedes, snails, and worms and starfish that are bioluminescent?  Crazy.

I don't think anyone should mind me posting this link, since we're all talking about something that is perfectly legal:

I've even heard that some mycologists use them as night-lights!

There's also a bacteria that can easily be isolated from fresh fish that glows well. You can grow it in sterilised sea water (natural or artificial) with a nutrient source such as malt extract added. Photobacterium phosphoreum, although I think it might now be called vibrio phosphoreum, or something like that.
A 250mL flask is bright enough to read by. And as the oxygen in the liquid gets used up, the light fades, and then shaking the flask produces a very bright burst of light, which then fades down again... very cool. Although not as cool looking as fungi.
Certain dinoflagellates can be ordered online and produce bright flashes of blue light when mechanically disturbed (ie, by shaking their flask). They're as easy to grow as a houseplant. Just keep them in a fairly bright place and fertilise occaisionally.
Bioluminescence is cool .
