Casing Mix Question

Okay... my friend has made 60/40 coir/verm casing mix many times. Although, here is the issue... he finds it very difficult to determine if it is actually 60/40. Does anyone have a good technique for measuring this ratio? He usually wets it field capacity and then mixes it via measuring cups. Anyone have an easier method? thank you

Outta curiosity, is the 40% measured by expanded coir or when it's in brick form? I never actually understood that.

I believe it's in expanded form...
Mix the coir with water until it's soupy then slowly add the verm until it's the right consistancy. I think it ends up being pretty close to 60/40 if you do it this way, but like Domey said, it doesn't have to be perfect...

I'd flip that. use 60 coir and 40 verm.

Alright, thanks. Also, one last question somewhat related to the topic. I read a tek saying to sterilize or pasteurize the casing layer. What I was planning on doing was just taking a 1x1/2x1/2 foot^3 tupperwear box, put in the substrate about 4 inches deep and then about 1 inch of casing layer. This'll go in a terrarium with perlite about 1/4th inch think on bottom. Under these conditions, is it necessary to pasteurize/steralize the casing layer? I'm not quite sure how important this step is because most of the teks do not include it.

How important it is depends on you. Where your getting this stuff from, how clean your house is, how long its been stored for ect. I sterilize all my casing mix. Hard to measure coco coir so I throw a bunch (like half a brick) in a big bowl and add water. Then fill the bowl up almost the same height with verm. Add more water then mix really well. Make sure theres no excess water, pack in quart jars (I do enough for about 10 at a time) PC them all (10 quarts in my pc perfect! ) Then use as needed. Lasts me about a week then make up another batch!
Lots use more coir then verm and more verm then coir in all amounts to just straight both so whatever you mix up is your own mix..see what works for you. More cococoir will mean faster growth through the casing layer but more verm will hold water better then coco coir. Figure out which you want and need and adjust your recipe accordingly! I use about 50/50 I think

I use coir/verm anywhere from 60/40-70/30 myself. 50/50 sounds good too.

I noticed that you and a few others are more heavy on coir, if anything I'm more heavy on verm..perhaps I should try being coir heavy for a vew casings...
I do use the horticultural grade though, not very course so maybe this would be a difference? Can't find anything bigger then this stuff..
