sorry for the blurriness but something about the sun shining on the luster of the cap made it so hard for the cam to focus

Hey, I've found some of those also i think.
Looks a lot like some of my cortinarius finds and the rusty brown spore deposit on the stem is a clue.

That's one of the very few Cortinarius that are distinctive enough to make them easy to identify to species. Only one question - is the cap surface bitter or not?
If it is bitter, then they are Cortinarius iodeoides. If not, then they are Cortinarius iodes.
Happy mushrooming!

"I do not recommend any North American Cortinarius for the table; they are extremely difficult to identify, edibility is not known for many (most?) of the hundreds of species, and some are known to be very toxic."

Dude don't give out information if you don't know what you are talking about... You're going to get someone sick. As 'far' as you know isn't 'far' enough because your method of determining toxic mushrooms is very dangerous.

I'm only transmitting information that I've read. The pros use taste testing as a feature for identification... Its not really a way to determine if something is toxic or not, more of a extra feature helpful get an ID. And i didnt reccomend anyone swallow anything.

Information you read? What information? Where does it say to place an unidentified mushroom on your toungue?

The pros? Ok dude you are really starting to pull bullshit out on me. If you read the Mushroom hunting FAQ easily available on this site it says: "I was also told that if you place a small piece of mushroom under the tongue and there is no burning or reaction within an hour, that the shroom is probably OK. Is this correct? --------------------------------------------------------------------- This idea for telling if a mushroom is poisonous is going to get you sick or dead. The only known safe way to tell if a mushroom is poisonous is to identify it to species. Consider that the most dangerous toxins, the amatoxins in the deadly Amanitas, can show no effects whatsoever for 12 hours, and even in large doses take at least 4 hours to show effects. Based on your friend's idea you could munch down a whole bunch of Amanita phalloides (the mushroom which kills more people than any other), since they taste good and won't show any symptoms until it's too late." Once again, if you don't know what your talking about, don't say anything man, you're going to get someone sick, especially making claims like you read it places and that the "pros" do it.

Hey, im sorry if you misunderstood me.
I was not coming up with a method of telling a poisonous mushroom apart from something edible. The only thing i was saying was that taste a characteristic which helps in the ID of species or genus in some cases.
I did NOT mean that a mushroom is safe to eat as long as the taste is certain way.

I know you didn't say it was safe to eat, but you DID say it was safe to take a small taste, which is infact not true.

Thanks for being cool about it dude I understand exactly the point you were trying to get across (determining the difference between two species of the same EDIBLE genus), but to someone browsing this site that information can easily be interperated into dangerous information.

im still alive dont worry haha.. i wouldnt do anything stupid .. i read alot about hunting.. speaking as an ignorant newbie if someone tells me to taste test i would have to be a stupid bastard to munch down on them .. i would assume that anyone would consider a taste test to be very minimal.. but then again people dont always want to take baby steps.. but even with what i know i find it hard to believe that if i nibbled the smallest little piece of say a death cap just to taste it and spit it out that it would take me down .. without getting this whole debate going again.. is that a stupid assumption for me to make?

for some species, this can involve tasting the mushroom and immediately spitting it out. no one said to EAT it.

in fact, it is. From Mushrooms Demystified: "Incidentally, almost any mushroom can be safely tasted by chewing on a small piece of the cap and then spitting it out. However it is not a good policy to sample unknown mushrooms, particularly Amanitas. Do so only when it is called for in the keys or descriptions." DH

VC77 Becareful about giving people shit for spreading misinformation when YOU yourself don't know the facts.
What array said was perfectly fine.
It's fine to taste test a mushroom as long as it's a tiny amount and you spit out what you taste tested.
Unless someone's sprinkled the mushroom with ricin, you're not going to die.
