Spraying Casings
    #3175793 - 09/24/04 06:00 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I keep reading about people spraying their casings. Is this always necessary?...How moist should the casing layer be kept?...should it be as moist as when it was first layed?

Also, is it too late to spray once pinning has formed?...

I keep my casings at optimum levels as far as the mycelium is concerned which is "near saturation". I do not mist during pinsetting stage as this will interfere with the process IME. Now you never want puddling, runoff or dripping what you want is the point where the casing just glistens with moisture, it helps to think of it as a sponge it will soak up and hold only so much water before it drips, now it is impossible to keep it at this point and that is good to because transpiration is an important part of a healthy environment. With plenty of FAE thru fanning or coolmist automation this cycle of transpiration will create the perfect conditions for a healthy crop. This is a time when slighty lower RH can be beneficial. You can continue to mist after pins have formed in order to keep your casings moisture content near optimum which will allow your mushrooms to grow prolifically. GL

If pins have formed , but your RH is low or case looks dry you can still mist , just try to avoid spraying the little fellas themselves this can cause rotting of the caps .
Hyphae said it so eloquently I feel left out

Is it neccesary to mist ? In some instances yes . Look at it this way mushies are 90% water , they need to get it from somewheres . Some moisture they actually extract from the surrounding air , the majority they get from the substrate\casing , as they grow they dry out the sub\case , so you must replenish this with misting , direct watering .

Good Luck

Water on mushrooms does not rot them BTW I mean as long as there is fresh air introduced adequately. I have been doing this from day one almost and never once had a single mushroom rot This is just been my experience BTW and natures  TY for the kind words tripndicular

Here's an aerial view of my casing - it looks kind of dry, but when I touch it, it still seems sort of spongy. I guess I'm wondering if high humdity in the chamber should be enough to keep the casing layer adequetly moist?...

No boogey pickin or ass scratchin before touchy touchy
You will know if drying out by the color of casing , not by spongy feel . If color lightens up drastically you are not misting enough .
