Beer and Mushrooms. Perhaps they can help each other?
    #3175391 - 09/24/04 02:21 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I used to brew beer at home. I saved a lot of my spent grain(barley) and kept in a tub outside for about a year. Now it is pretty well composted and even has a couple medium sized plants growing out of it. Do you think this could be sterilized and then used as a substrate or casing material? I'm not sure what the nutes in it would be, but plants were growing on it so it shouldn't be that bad IMO. Any beer brewers out there have experience with this? I'm think of mixing it up and using it in place of peat using the 50/50 tek. You think this experiment is worthwile/ Or should I mix it with poo and use as a substrate?

sounds more like a substrate, you don't want nutrients in your casing layer.

if you have it as a compost, why don't you just dump your spent casings and cakes into that compost pile? i'm sure the mushies would love you for it.

Woah!!! That sounds so interesting, since I have been a brewer for a few years now and in the back of my mind always wondered how I could integrate the two.

What do you think about dry hopping a pale with afew ounces of M&M's. Sounds like a good party favor to me!!!!!
Anyone ever tried I would be very interested in your results!!
    :3rd_eye:

I brew and have made some WILD ferments.
I took about 20lbs of poppy staw and made 6STRONG gallons of tea and added a 4lbs of DME then pitched in the Pacman yeast.
After the primary I dry hopped with 3-1gallon zip-locs of san pedro dried stars
and secondaried for a month @50F and bottled.Aged for 3months inthe bottle@50F.
It was clean and clear and tasted like protovomit but man what it did to your mindscape...WHEWWEEE!
Use your imagination and don't add anything one could OD on(Belladonna, etc).
