I sort of loosely believe in it, though not the reasoning behind it. I don't think it's so much the positions of the stars as just the time of year in which you're born. I wouldn't rely on it for making major decisions in my life, but I've found that sometimes when I'm talking to someone I can tell what sign they are without being told, though I'm certainly not confident enough in this ability to take any Swami challenges.

Astrology is based on the mystical assumption that the sun's and the planets' gravity primarily, and to a much lesser extent the moon's gravity, influence the personality of people.
What if I told you that the gravitational effect of all the planets and the sun combined on the Earth is less than 2% the gravitational effect of the moon on the Earth?
Does astrology still makes sense?

Your 'sign' is defined by where the sun was in the ecliptic on the day you were born.
What if I told you that due to a property of spinning objects called precession, the Earth's axis of rotation has shifted sufficiently since astrology was invented in ancient Babylonian times such that everyone's signs is actually wrong because all the constellations on the ecliptic have since shifted by ~one sign?
Whatever sign you think you were born under, you were actually born one sign over. The few astrologers who know enough astronomy to be aware of this fact neglect to mention it because it would mess up their $ystem.
Does astrology still makes sense?

For kicks (and because it's free) I did the partial astrological reading at:

After the partial reading teases you, they ask for $25 for a full reading ($5 discount for a limited time).
Here's part of the result:
"You will notice at certain places in the reading that contradictory information seems to be given. This is to be expected, because the personality of most people is extremely complex."
 That's very convenient.
Let me translate. This site uses a program to generate your horoscope. There's no human involved at all, which by the way makes the $25 fee outrageous. But back to my point; the reason for the above Contradiction Disclaimer is that the computer, having no ego, spits out exactly what it's been programmed to even if that information is contradictory.
A human astrologer seeing the same contradiction in your chart adjusts the data in his interpretation of the chart to obscure the contradiction. He conveniently glosses over or completely discards any contradictions and makes up pretty much whatever he thinks you want to hear which usually boils down to complimenting you.
But wait, if you act NOW, we'll throw in a free set of self-sharpening Ginsu knives....

Astrology is funky business. Our spirits being born in this downgraded limited reality can only carry along a small fraction of their essence.
To make a long story short, your sign your born under is only a 'selection' of your energies in this mortal reality. Think of zodiac sign as a prism. It splits white light into many colors. White light (whole you) is all those colors and much more. But only one color is manifested in 3d, thos giving you one unique set of qualities, which is only a fraction of real you.
I like this astrology stuff, you can just look at an astro sign and 'feel' for the enrgy vibes coming from it.

my uncle lives a mostly hermetic life in his wilderness cabin, smoking (cigarettes with a pinch of dope) forming horroscopes and preching his wierd religious/conspiracy theories to his followes (he has some regular visitors!) anyways from what i can see his astrological knowledge (its pretty extensive as far as it goes , he can make a full start/solar/lunar chart) has not helped his life in any noticeable way (nor has paying regular tithes to the guru maharaji for no reason)
for what thats worth anyways

Did you know that you are actually living your life by the wrong sign ?
The signs of the zodiac were done over a thousand years ago , and since then their places in the heavens have moved . So if you "think" you are an Aries you are actually a Pieces . So how accurate do you really think those charts are ?
Just saw that the other night on the SCI channel .

That would imply that I believed that it was actually the constellations which influenced sign characteristics, and not merely the seasonal changes here on Earth.

I thought the topic was "astrology" not weather patterns and how they may or may not influence ones daily life .
Astrology itself is based on the positions of the stars , and planets , sun , moon yakity shmakity blah blah blah .
I would never "imply" such a thing to you ss7 
By the way lets test your theory of being able to guess(hunch) ones sign ...........
What am I , if I believed in such things ?

If you read my post, you would see that I claimed I only sometimes got a hunch of what someone's sign is(call it intuition). I do not get such hunches with you, so the best I could do would be to take a wild guess, which I don't do. And by the way, one's beliefs are not an indication of their sign. It is rather about personality, which is hard to judge over the internet(and often in person as well), especially since I hardly know you. Furthermore, I did not state my ability as a theory. Intuition is not something I have enough control over to turn it on or off at will(if I could, I'd be in Vegas right now getting rich). It comes unexpectedly.

Well, you were wrong on all three of those guesses, so that would certainly discredit the idea that anyone can accurately guess a person's sign every time. But that's ok. And I never said you were trying to get me all worked up, nor did I get all worked up(I merely went into a lengthy explanation).
