Growing Lepista nuda and Coprinus Comatus on a bale of straw
    #3173557 - 09/24/04 02:39 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Have found this posting on mycoculture's mailinglist archive:

Quote:

If you leave the bale intact, and immerse it under water for 3 days, you
have effectively sterilized it. It takes about 1.5 days after you drain
the water for the bale to lose enough water to be ready for
innoculation, in my experience. Innoculation can be by slurry of fresh
sporocarps, or can be via prepared spawn. By breaking the bales into
leaves, and scattering a little spawn on each, you will ensure rapid
colonization of Lepista nuda, Pleurotus ostreatus, P. columbianum,
Coprinus comatus, and potentially several other fungi which happen to be
producing spores at that time near where you innoculate.

Lepista nuda is especially suited for this type of cultivation, and
ryegrass straw is an ideal medium. Often it will fruit from the bale
even if not innoculated.

For November-March fruiting, consider innoculation by October.

Would be worth trying - what do you think ?

Didn't you do exactly this with Stropharia sugoso-annulata?

No, not exactly, cause I pasteurized the bale in my bathing tube in hot water over night and inoculated it with wood spawn and not a mycelium/spore slurry.
But it's true: else than that there is not much difference.

Just think that it is interesting that also Lepista nuda and Coprinus comatus will grow this way on straw.

Sure it is worth trying..
at least it does not sound too laborious.. <--edit

on bales that one farmer had abandoned..

Yeah, that would be a good candidate for cloning.
Kind of preselection ...
