Incubaing Humidity question
    #3172963 - 09/23/04 11:08 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

The area I have picked for my grow has a constant humidity of 40-50%. It never goes above 50, and never below 40. Is this not humid enough for incubating 10 half pint pf tek jars?

You need 90%+ for the incubation?

If you're incubating i'm assuming you're using jars or gladware containers. They'll hold plenty enough humidity. It's the growing that you'll have to worry about.

For your incubation chamber you need ambiant humidity, do not try to control it..the water content of your jars is important at this stage. Once they go into the fruiting chamber you need 90+ but thats after they come out of the jars.

exactly. the jars create all the humidity that your mycelium will need to colonize as long as you got the mixture right. you can be off a little and still colonize, but drier means you're more likely to get a stalled jar or one that doesn't colonize at all. on the other hand, too wet could drown the spores to where they won't colonize... plus it invites contaminants to come in.

don't worry about adding humidity to your incubator. you'll be fine. oh, and good luck.

Ok, thanks. I will definitely have the humidity up for fruiting, so I don't need to worry about that. Just making sure that I don't screw up the incubation part by not having a good grow environment.

I also have another question. I looked for the 8 oz Gladware containers so I can microwave them, instead of boiling. I could only find 4 oz containers. I plan on making a few casings, and fruiting a few of them straight out of the containers. Are the 4 oz containers too small for fruiting by themselves, or should I just make them all into casings? I thought that since I couldn't find the 8 oz containers I could just use these since they'd colonize faster and therefore have less chance of contam.

Thanks
