Genetics?
    #3169860 - 09/23/04 12:22 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Mr. X isolated a pure, healthy and rizomorphic cubensis strain on agar and fruited it. He took the resulting shrooms and did some prints. The question is: will these spores be more prone to easier and quicker form rizomorphs than the resulting spores of a multispore non isolated strain cultivation?

It would still be more random then taking a piece of that isolate and making a liquid culture. Spores are many and some are good and some are bad. Like if you had 1000 seeds that you germinate, some will grow some wont grow so well. You would still have this randomness of nature when you take a spore print and would then just have a multispore again. Some of the traits of the strain may be carried through a majority of the prints giving you a good multispore, that I could buy but to eliminate the randomness completly wouldnt happen.

when you isolate you are taking the best characters from the mushroom, when you multipore, you get just that, multiple types of myc.

When do you know you have isolate those characteristics?

By the rhizmiphoric growth on agar to begin and then through jars. Then the casing that performs the best and the mushroom that gets the biggest should be cloned. You can tell by how the growth is if its good or not. If it is keep the strain! Any time I do grain transfers I take the jar that finished first and looks the best to continute the strain and all my liquid cultures I try to make from the best jar or best mushroom or most rhizmiphoric growth on agar. Then you know you have a good isolate.
