Fish Tank Heater Question
    #3172167 - 09/23/04 08:59 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I just set up my first tub in tub incubator after reading as much as I could find about building them, and had a couple of quick questions...  First, what is the fire danger that has been experienced with using fish tank heaters, I would think they would be pretty safe but what have you all personally experienced?  Also, has anyone had any luck using just the suction cups provided with the fish tank heater?  I think thats it, I just wanted to make sure that is was safe to sleep next to my new incubator

Thanks in advance

I had no problems either. Faster colonization, perfect temps, and not much, if any risk noted. I used just the suction cups that come with it to hold it to the bottom tub with no problems. I kept the top tub on empty jars though so it didn't touch the heater.

Dude,
I got that suct cup one too. but with increased heat they do not hold on to the bottom. they are more designed for verticle sucking than horizontal. I suggest duct taping something heavy but heat resistant(stainless, metal, brass) and doesn't rust to the heater but tape it where the heater doesn't actually get hot. they usually have marks for this. them submerse it and stick a heavy ceramic plate underneath the heater. duct tape the cord to the inside and outside to protect against accidental snaggs and kicks, and you should be all set.

Mine dont float...glass jars in the bottom in the water (filled with water, no air) so the tob tub doesnt get to low. Heater sits at bottom. Long as theres water, no fire danger! Keep an eye on the water level though if it ever gets out of the water (thats REAL low) then you got fire danger!

Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
Casing layer colonization and overlay
