I innoculated a print of acadians last wednesday into a plastic container with full grains of rice and fine vermiculite. I hadnt noticed any growth and figured that i didnt have enough water in the container (it was pretty dry) so i opened it up today to put more water in. Then i saw small white stringy things that I'm assuming are pins and white fuzz on the rice. Are they pinning already? Should i birth them soon? What's going on?

It isnt pins, Im pretty shure its mycelium, but I dont know Im pretty new, I dont know what type tek you're using, with innoculating strait into a substrate w/o sterilazation, I assume no sterililzation seeing as how its plastic, but I dont know, I just dont get what your saying, wait till the more experience people answer

it's mycelium. wait till all the substrate is colonized, then birth it. what kind of container are you using, a plastic one? You should do some more research, try PF or the hawks eye. then go to other sites from there.

The strings that you are seeing aren't pins, it is rhizomorphic mycelial growth (the kind of growth you want to see.) You'll know pins when you see them- if you have to ask what they are, they're not pins. I've used plastic tupperware containers before with BRF and verm (sterilized in the microwave) but never with whole rice. It seems to me like just microwaving wouldn't be enough to sterilize it. I wish you luck. BTW, try not to open the container again until you birth it, it just gives the contams more of a chance.
