Cool stuff I found today...
    #3171592 - 09/23/04 09:11 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

The color of this is just so beautiful...I wanted to share.

A side shot of the same one!

And underneath!

Polypore???  Funnel shaped and tough!!!

Well....bummer....the other shots I took of possible actives won't fit on my pic file.  Hmmmmmmm.

Well....they were red and orange and tan and slimy and dry and crunchy and.......POOP!

Guess I haven't perfected the file conversion yet.

Mighta found some Liberty Caps too.  But I wanted confirmation.

Oh well.  Have a great evening!

That looks close to Polyporus badius. Nice specimen and photos.

Happy mushrooming!

Cool...thanks!

So Toxic one...if it's a Polyporus badius then I suppose it is indeed a polypore. *grin

One thing I don't "get" about polypores is how varied their shapes and forms are. I mean..."Polypores can take various forms. They may be pileate, having a pileus or distinguishable cap. Some may be stipitate, having a stalk. Or they may be resupinate (effused), lying flat on the substrate. Some may be effused-reflexed, which mean they lie flat on a flat (i.e. parallel to the ground) substrate, but form shelves where the substrate surface is not parallel to the ground Some genera are consistent, with all its species having one of these forms. More often there are mixed forms within a single genus. This character is more important at the species level, although sometimes even a single species may not be consistent." T Volk

They are just plain CURIOUS to me. I keep thinking that I am finding Grifola frondosa, "hen in the woods", here and there...but never am SURE...due, primarily to the texture issue. It is either limp like lettuce or tough like a shelf fungus. Therefore, I generally leave it behind.

One that I HAVE identified and found is Laetiporus sulphureus, but I have yet to eat any of it because it is always so beautiful in it's natural setting that I hate the thought of yanking it off the tree and out of the forest. Guess that may seem silly to some, but I really have never had the heart to do it.

Polypores do intrigue me though.

Aren't there some of them that are considered in the medicinals? A shelf variety comes to mind. Can't recall any specific names that I've read about right now though.

Anypoo...after looking at a few pics I would have to agree that it does look like a Polyporus badius, and it really was a beautiful thing to find on the sunny Fall day we had here in the PNW.

I'll try this Photo Bucket to share a few more.

FIRST...the forest du jor.  Nice day in the PNW!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/freedomseeker/Activeorno.jpg
I'm thinkin' Honey Mushrooms...Armillaria mellea???  Not sure.  I just thought they were pretty.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/freedomseeker/Dunnowhattheyare.jpg
Here are a few more on the ground.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/freedomseeker/Activeornounderneath.jpg
The underside.  Notice no rings though.  At first I had wondered if they were active...then I went for the Honey idea.  Now I don't have a clue.  Collybia family maybe???  No the right markers for a Galerina.  No ring.  Detached gills. Fairly fragile.  No dicernable spore print on white paper.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/freedomseeker/Prettycolor.jpg
Another beauty. Russula Emetica I figure.  The color was just so nice I couldn't pass up taking a pic.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/freedomseeker/MushroomsintheParkLakewood024.jpg
This guy was a loner growing in the grass at the edge of the forest.  Notice the fringe around the cap?  Apparently I haven't perfected the 'macro' setting on my camera.  I'm doing better...just not there yet.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/freedomseeker/whatisit2.jpg
The underside of my loner.  No blue bruising.  No ring.  The shot doesn't show how pretty it is.  Bluury!  Aaargh! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/freedomseeker/LBMsorLibertys.jpg
Anything or just LBM's once again???

I also found tons and tons and tons of flattened orange mushrooms growing in the grass and on  the forest floor.  Unfortunately the photos didn't really show much of the detail.  I'll try again next time I'm in that area.  Kinda rubbery caps compared to others, but gilled (descending the stalk)...not plypores.  Clitocybes maybe.

Just sharing...and reading...again.
