Update: Help a newb get a decent recording setup for < $3K
    #3170392 - 09/23/04 04:37 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Ok, I've been doing a lot of research, but I'm still getting highly confusing, contradictory info.  I'm an inspired musican with a room full of instruments, 3 thousand dollars to spend on a computer-based recording setup, and virtually zero knowledge on the subject.  Thats where I need your help.

I really want an imac G5.  Would the soundcard that comes with it be suficient for high quality recording, with midi input?  I hope so, cause it doesn't look like i'd be able to install anything else in that tiny thing.

Also, I thought i'd give you guys a bit of info about the type of recording I'd be doing.  I'd be recording a drumset, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, clarinet, harmonica, and all sorts of sounds from a synth and my midi keyboard.  The type of music: some pop rock with my band, and also any crazy stuff that I could come up with.  I want to be able to be tripping,  lay down some chords on the keyboard, drum over them, improvise on the guitar or clarinet, or sing, and have it come out sounding great.  And I have to do this for under 3 grand.

Whoever helps me the most gets a shoutout in one of the first songs I make on my system

well all of the good MIDI and audio interfaces are USB or Firewire,
because audio cards pick up too much noise from inside the computer.

i think the G5 has a 24 bit sound input, but you would need a USB MIDI interface ($50-$100)

i?ve already suggested the MOTU 828 MKii as a MIDI / Audio / Clock solution.

even better would be the Tascam 1884 Firewire...

it?s got 8 Preamps, MIDI, Motorized Faders, and overlays for all the different DAWs. ($900)

or the Digidesign DIGI 002:

it rox, but only works w/ ProTools... corporate bastards. ($1800)

if you are going to be recording your band,
you should really go for the tascam,
which allows you record 8 phantom-powered mics @ once.

if you want pristine vocals, you should also figure in a good tube mic ($300 - 500)
