what kind of agaricus is this ?
    #3170260 - 09/23/04 02:02 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I found some mushrooms directly on my mothers compost heap and they look very much like some sort of agaricus.
The color of the cap was kind of grey-white and the diameter about 13 centimeters:

The spore print was of a dark chocolate brown and the lamealle looked like that:

When I cut it in the middle it bruised ab bit and got a light yellow-reddish color:

Here is another pic where you can see the annulus very well:

What kind of agaricales could that be?

What does it smell like?

Sweet, like almonds? Chemically, like phenol? Nothing at all? None of the above?

It smelled nice, that means that it did not smell chemical.
But it did not smell like almonds either - it was a pleasant but not very strong smell.
Hard to explain ...

Hmm... sounds like something from the Agaricus osecanus group but it seems to bruise more readily and darker than them, possible A. arvensis.
Agaricus is difficult to ID to species, especially without having it hands-on. It's easier to just ID it to a group. The only poisonous Agaricus fall in the Xanthodermati group which will stain strongly yellow then later turn a reddish-brown color and has a phenolic smell, sometimes faint.

Try bruising the very base of the mushroom and see if it stains a strong yellow.

Peace - @cro

@cro - thanks for your input !

It's too late for that since I have thrown it away some day's ago.
The fucking upload limit keeps me from posting things when they happen ...
But when I was bruising it the color changed very slowly to a very light yellow and after some time from light rose to light brown.
But the colors where always light and they developed slowly.

I am sure that it is edible since my parent already have eaten it several times
But I also thought that it should be A. arvensis when I tried out the keys at www.bluewillowpages.com and http://www.mykoweb.com/misc/Agaricus_key.pdf.

Your third photo seems to show that it has stained reddish/pinkish. That would put it among the Sanguinolenti, rather than one of the yellow staining subgenera. Fortunately, as far as I remember, all the red stainers are edible.

Happy mushrooming!

Hmmh, it that really is a pale red then I would identify it as a (wild) form of A. bisporus ?

Yeah, Agaricus bisporus is one of the more likely species. The wild versions of it taste better than the ones in the store.

Happy mushrooming!
